Man charged with stealing thousands worth of goods from Gravenhurst grocery stores

The Bracebridge detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged one man in relation to several thefts in Gravenhurst.

On October 7, 2025, at 3:40 p.m. Bracebridge OPP officers responded to reports of a theft in progress at a local grocery store located on Edward Street in Gravenhurst. The store staff recognized the individual as a person who had stolen from the store previously and acted quickly. Police attended and their investigation revealed that the same suspect was responsible for a sizeable theft from another grocery store in Gravenhurst earlier that day. The same suspect is alleged to have stolen thousands of dollars of product from Gravenhurst grocery stores on September 8th and 17th, 2025.

Police have charged 59-year-old Gyorgy LAKATOS of Scarborough, ON with Theft Under $5000 X 4 and Fail to Comply with Probation X 6.  He was held in custody and will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge for a bail hearing on October 9, 2025 to answer to his charges.
