A Muskoka musician has channelled the grief of losing her father into her art, and now she wants to celebrate that work and honour her father with a new album and concert.
On June 25 at the Gravenhurst Opera, Blackbird Records presents Sherri Breuker & the Remarkable 8 and their CD release and Memorial Concert.
The album, Your Great Big Smile, is in honour of Breuker’s late father Don Coates, who was also the former mayor of Bracebridge. Coates was a District councillor before being elected mayor from 2006 to 2010.
“He loved music and was very instrumental in helping and encouraging my music career,” says Breuker, via a blog she kept while recording the process of making the album. “In the last two years of his life, I took him to Peter’s Players for blues concerts which were lots of fun.”
Brueker will be joined by Richard Jackson, who is coming in from Costa Rica to play drums, Rob Almond from Bracebridge on bass, Ralph Johnson from Barrie on upright bass, Ian Thurston from Barrie on electric guitar, Randy Hoover from Orillia on flugelhorn and Mitch Beube from Bracebridge on tenor sax.
Those who purchase a ticket will also receive one free CD per couple or family.
Brueker says the album was all written in 2020, deep in the throws of the pandemic and her husband Steve recorded and produced the entire album.
“Come help celebrate this momentous occasion – have a glass of wine at the Trillium bar at intermission and enjoy the show,” she says.
