Local concert bands are tuning up for a month of festive music, offering three holiday performances across the region in mid-December.
The Muskoka Concert Band will once again present its annual Deck the Shelves program, a one-hour concert sponsored by the Bracebridge Library. The performance takes place Saturday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. and features a mix of popular Christmas favourites along with a traditional audience sing-along. Admission is free, though donations are welcome.
The band returns the following day for its longer seasonal showcase, Sleigh Ride, set for Sunday, Dec. 21 at 2:30 p.m. at Gravenhurst United Church. Tickets are $20, with children 12 and under admitted free; cash only at the door.
The concert includes a range of holiday repertoire such as Do You Hear What I Hear arranged by Jerry Nowak, Richard Saucedo’s Christmas Festival Overture, Lennie Niehaus’s Three Moods of Hannukah, and Together At Christmas, a collection of pop standards including Winter Wonderland and Marshmallow World. Audience members will also be invited to sing along to classics like Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and Jingle Bells. The program concludes with the band’s namesake piece, Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride.
Muskoka’s holiday music calendar begins a week earlier when the Gravenhurst Bifocals Concert Band presents its Home for Christmas show on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. at Gravenhurst Trinity United Church. Their program includes selections from The Nutcracker and seasonal works by Gustav Holst, Irving Berlin and Mel Tormé. Organizers say audience members may even see a surprise visit from the Chipmunks, and the Bifocals Singers will lead a sing-along segment.
Admission to the Bifocals concert is by suggested $20 donation, with children 12 and under admitted free.
Organizers hope residents will come out to enjoy the music, support local performers and celebrate the season together.
