A taste for craft beer and an idea for the extraordinary led to the evolution of a little hamlet in Muskoka Lakes.

It started with the vintage Clear Lake Village Resort and the addition of a few more cabins. Then a converted service station became a pizza restaurant; next came a few more resort cabins. Now add a craft brewery and then mix it all up.. with a woodland spa experience.

Before long, “Downtown Torrance” became a favourite stop for locals and visitors alike. Drawn by a welcoming environment and eclectic personalities, guests love the freshly-brewed beer, delicious food, a playground for kids and a summer beer garden that converts to an ice rink in winter.

Live entertainment in the tap room year-round, and outdoor concerts on warm summer evenings complete this idyllic scene.

But we digress… back to the beer spa.

Torrance is well-known for Torrance Barrens dark sky preserve and the beautiful hiking trails at Hardy Lake Provincial Park. The area begged for an expansive outdoor spa facility, in keeping with the fresh air and wellness focus the destination is known for.

And so the goal became to build the quintessential Canadian spa experience. This would not be just any outdoor spa, and certainly not one where you get shushed if you have a laugh with your friends.

Introducing Muskoka BeerSpa!

Now open, this unique facility includes hot and cool pools, three saunas, steam, a dump bucket and a forest beach with hammocks; not to mention a margarita bar and taco stand.

Says founder Greg Knight, “At the beer spa I visited in Europe, people were actually soaking in the beer. We think that’s an awful waste of good beer, so our pools are filled with water, and we save the beer for drinking. We do use beer ingredients in our locally-made spa products.”

Yes, Muskoka BeerSpa is still a resort, and each cabin contains its own draft fridge. But in keeping with the tradition of welcoming the local community with open arms, Muskoka BeerSpa encourages day visitors too.

The purchase of a day pass gets you a lifetime membership to the “Belly Floppers Club.” What does that mean? It means you have an affinity for quirky people, great beer, yummy food, the outdoors and fun.

Muskoka BeerSpa. Not your mama’s spa.
