Muskoka Conservancy honour founding member George Snider

From the Muskoka Conservancy:

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of a founder and friend, George Snider.

George’s contributions to Muskoka Conservancy were many, starting over 36 years ago as a founder, and continued through this autumn with regular phone calls to share encouragement and enthusiasm for our mission to protect nature in Muskoka.

George was one of the founders of Muskoka Heritage Foundation in 1987 and was also on the founding Board of the Muskoka Heritage Trust in 1996. George remained engaged after his time serving as a director, providing advice and guidance when those entities were merged into Muskoka Conservancy in 2013.

“George was always constructive and optimistic,” says Scott Young, Executive Director. “When I started out with the Conservancy, we weren’t in the best shape. George was the first to step forward to share some background and offer support. He was always considerate. His friendship and perspective helped me personally, and helped our organization find our way through that rough patch. George has been with us time and again, in good times and whenever we needed a boost. In fact, Muskoka Conservancy would not be what it is without George, so he is still with us.”

George’s time as a key supporter has seen Muskoka Conservancy grow from a fledgling non-profit to a thriving land trust that protects over 5,000-acres of land across Muskoka’s watersheds, including over 65,000-feet of natural shoreline. He was pivotal in acquisition of several properties, including the Campbell-Mason Nature Reserve on Lake Joseph, and Highlands Island Nature Reserve, near Royal Muskoka Island on Lake Rosseau.

George was not only a founder, director, and broker of land deals, he also enjoyed working the Gift Shop in partnership with another key volunteer, Elizabeth Mason. Together, George and Elizabeth were a dynamic duo of tea towel sales, having a positive impact for over 20-years.

George’s unwavering commitment to Muskoka Conservancy’s conservation efforts has left an indelible mark on communities across Muskoka, fostering deep connections between people and the land we cherish.

Our thoughts are with the Snider family.
