Muskoka District Council has approved a paid leave of absence for Councillor Peter Johnston from July 1 to Nov. 14, 2026.
The resolution was introduced by Councillor G. Burry and seconded by Councillor B. Rhodes during the July 20 council meeting.
The motion references the Ontario’s Municipal Act, which states that a council seat can become vacant if a member is absent from council meetings for three consecutive months without authorization from council. By formally approving the leave, council ensures Johnston’s seat will not be declared vacant during the absence.
Council also approved remuneration for Alternate Member Christina Hunter, who will receive $1,180.41 per month from July 1 through Nov. 14 while filling in during Johnston’s leave. Both Hunter and Johnston are also members of Gravenhurst council.
In addition, council amended its committee appointments to replace Johnston on the Finance and Corporate Services Committee. Councillor Sandy Cairns will serve on the committee for the July 22 meeting, while Councillor Erin Strength will assume the role effective July 23.
The resolution did not specify the reason for Johnston’s leave request.
Johnston has served as a member of Muskoka District Council and has held a number of leadership roles within the district.
