Muskoka embracing the region’s new authentic Asian flavours

Highway 11 north into cottage country has always been a stop for outdoor gear, gas and cottage supplies but over the past few years, it’s also become known for something else: one of Muskoka’s top culinary experiences.

Three years ago Thong Thai Cuisine opened its doors at 2408 Highway 11 North in Gravenhurst. Located beside the Golden Pine Inn, Thong Thai (which interestingly translates to Golden Thai in English) currently has a perfect five out of five rating on TripAdvisor, and has become a go-to location for locals and guests seeking authentic Asian flavour.

“We had been coming to Muskoka every summer to enjoy the beautiful environment from our cottage but we saw a lack of lunch and dinner choices,” says Kim Tamwichai, the owner of Thong Thai. “We thought the community here might enjoy our take on Thai street food. When an opportunity at a prime location came up we decided to open up in Gravenhurst permanently.”

Kim was born and raised in Thailand and describes Thai food as a balance of flavours: sweet, sour, salty and spicy.

“It’s unique but with the right balance it creates an intense flavour that is always exciting,” she says.

Kim says their most popular dishes include mango salad, pad Thai, Panang curry, pad kee mao (drunken spicy noodles) and mango crispy chicken.

While many customers return time and again for their favourites the menu is extensive and includes pad Thai noodles, tom yum soup, green curry, cashew nut stir fry, pineapple fried rice and many more.

Kim says opening during the pandemic was a challenge, but offering takeout and delivery to start (as well as dining-in now) allowed her to show the community what she had to offer and create a solid customer base.

Focus on authenticity and affordable dishes has helped grow Thong Thai’s reputation and culinary following.

Running a business and now living in Muskoka year-round has been a significant change for Kim. However, she said she’s been overwhelmed by the warm welcome and is thankful that the local community has embraced her and her business so quickly.

“We want to thank all of our customers,” she says. “We truly appreciate their loyalty and friendship. It means a lot to our staff. Will continue to provide the best traditional and tasty Thai street-style food with quick and friendly service for an affordable price to serve the community.”
