A Muskoka Lakes man who attempted to flee from police while driving over the legal alcohol limit has been sentenced to 60 days of house arrest.
Jake Martin, 37, appeared in a Bracebridge courtroom recently, where he pleaded guilty to failing to stop for police and driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
According to court proceedings, on June 8, 2025, at about 4:30 p.m., Bracebridge OPP officers were patrolling Lake Joseph Road when they observed an SUV travelling over the speed limit. The officer activated the cruiser’s emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver did not pull over.
Police testified that the vehicle continued along the roadway before taking a corner at a high rate of speed and eventually stopping at a dead end. The driver, identified as Martin, told officers he did not stop because he was intoxicated.
Breath tests later showed Martin had a blood alcohol concentration of 217 milligrams, more than twice the legal limit.
The court also heard that Martin has a previous criminal record.
Justice sentenced him to 60 days of house arrest, a one-year driving prohibition, and one year of probation.
