A 41-year-old Muskoka man has been sentenced to house arrest after pleading guilty to dangerous driving for a collision on Highway 11 in Huntsville that police say was a deliberate act.
The court in Bracebridge heard that on April 18, 2024, around 6 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police were called to a serious crash near Aspdin Road. A vehicle had been traveling the wrong way on the highway when it collided with a transport truck.
When officers arrived, they found the transport truck on its side and both vehicles with extensive damage. According to evidence presented in court, the man intentionally drove into the path of the transport in an attempt to take his own life.
The court also heard that roughly 20 minutes earlier, the man had made an earlier attempt at another Highway 11 crossing by pulling his vehicle into traffic and stopping in the lane. A transport truck driver managed to swerve to avoid a full collision, though the man’s front bumper was ripped off in the process. The near miss was captured on dashcam footage and later reviewed by investigators.
The man had no prior criminal record.
Following his guilty plea, the court sentenced him to six months of house arrest, three additional months under curfew, and imposed an 18-month driving ban.
