Muskoka musician offers Peace for troubled times

A Gravenhurst-based musician is hoping her music can help serve as a balm in troubling times.

Bodeen’s debut single, and the corresponding video for Let There be Peace,  tackling a range of issues covering everything from gun violence to the war in Ukraine.

“It’s an activist song but it touches on all kinds of issues like disease, police brutality and hatred within mankind,” says Bodeen, who wrote the song during the pandemic. “It is an extremely timely piece of music due to there being so much hate and war in the world right now.”

The 26-year-old also has a single called On Read set for release later this month.

“On Read Is essentially the same as being ghosted,” she explains. “It’s a pop song but I wanted to do something that expresses that feeling of wanting someone or something and not feeling it being returned.  I think that’s a feeling that almost everyone can relate to.”

Bodeen was born and raised in Toronto and spent the majority of her life in the Beaches, leaving Toronto after high school for London to get her sociology degree at Western University. It was in London where she created a name (and alter ego Bodeen) for herself before relocating to  Gravenhurst where her parents have lived for the past six years.

She says that creating the artist name and image for Bodeen meant she could step into the light and be who she wanted to be, without her past getting in the way.

The drive to make music began when Bodeen asked for a guitar at the age of nine. That Christmas her wish was answered and by the age of 10 she was taking classes for both guitar and singing. By the time middle school and high school rolled around Bodeen had a long list of original material she created.

Bodeen remains hard at work creating a semi-acoustic EP which she hopes to release in the fall.
