The waiting game goes on with regard to the Muskoka Regional Centre, much as it has for the past 30 years.
Speaking earlier this week a representative from Infrastructure Ontario (IO) who own the property, confirmed they have a preferred proponent.
“Following an open and competitive process, infrastructure Ontario has selected a preferred proponent for the Muskoka Regional Centre, “ said Catherine Tardik from infrastructure Ontario. “We are currently in the inspection phase and therefore no final decisions have been made with respect to the future use of the property.”
Tardik declined to comment on who the preferred proponent is or provide any kind of timeline.
“As the comprehensive review and inspection process is still underway, IO cannot comment further at this time,” she said.
The 74-acre property sits on a piece of prime real estate along the Lake Muskoka shoreline and is owned by the province.
The property was originally opened as the Muskoka Cottage Sanatorium in 1897. In 1960 the Province of Ontario transitioned the site to a housing and care facility for developmentally challenged individuals before it ultimately closed in 1994. It has stood vacant ever since.
The property was nearly sold to Maple Leaf Education System but the deal ultimately broke down in June of 2019.
