On Sunday May 30, 2021, the 13th annual Trek for Tourette will see Muskoka residents putting their feet to local pathways for a virtual 5 km charity fun walk to support Tourette Canada in its annual fundraising drive.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a poorly understood neurodevelopmental disorder that affects as many as one in 100 Canadian children and adults. It
currently has no cure.

Last year’s Trek for Tourette was held virtually as an alternative format in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic. It was called the #UntraditionalTrek due to its virtual nature. Considering participants traditionally gather together to Trek around a designated route to raise Tourette awareness and funds for Tourette Canada. Participants were asked to do the same as previous years, but within the comfort
of their communities.

“Last year for our #UntraditionalTrek we had over 45 ‘trekkers’ and we raised $3300,” says event organizer Shawn Forth, Muskoka TS Resource Unit leader. “This year he’s hoping for similar results.”

The Trek for Tourette used to be held in March, a month with unpredictable and challenging weather, much like a TS+ diagnosis for a family. Last year the Trek was moved to late May as a result of the pandemic. Late May’s rainy weather holds a similar resemblance to Tourette Syndrome, says Forth – one that is attached to Tourette Canada’s core values and mission and the organization’s national logo of a
yellow kite.

Forth explains the significance of the kite in Tourette Canada’s logo: “The kite is a symbol of struggle and success. Each kite’s journey is unique and random, much like those who live with TS. With the help of its string the kite can be guided and encouraged, just like the support provided by Tourette Canada and our families supporting their loved ones with TS.”

The new date for the Trek for Tourette also falls directly in the middle of Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month (May 15 – June 15).
Tourette Canada receives no government funding, and relies on the generosity of Canadians to support its ongoing work to educate, promote awareness, and provide a supportive network to families diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome.

The Trek for Tourette is the only national fundraiser. Any community members interested in trekking are asked to register online at www.tourette.ca/trek Pledges can be made online. Participants are asked to upload their photos to social media using the
hashtag #TrekforTourette
