If you love board games, a new one featuring Muskoka’s landscapes and landmarks is about to hit the market.
Muskoka: The Board Game is the pandemic brainchild of Trent Hansen and Darrin Henein.
Henein and Hansen met while working at the Muskoka Woods camp on Lake Rosseau—which is also where they met their wives—and have retained a love for Muskoka ever since.
“It’s always been a special place for the four of us,” says Henein, so when Hansen approached him with an idea for a Muskoka-based board game, he was all in.
Their own experiences, combined with research, informed the landmarks included in the game – the things that people come to Muskoka to see.
Making the game was “a creative outlet and a way for us to keep in touch” through the pandemic, adds Henein. And after many prototypes and trial and error to zero in on the mechanics of the game and ensure it would be a fun pastime, they’re now ready to bring it to market.
The game, which Henein likens to the Euro-style Ticket to Ride series of board games, is targeted at ages eight and older and will take two to six players between 20 and 60 minutes to play. Here’s how the company describes the game: “Players journey between landmark locations by land and lake using explore cards, take in the sights and sounds to gain advantages with rest & relax cards, and earn the wildlife point tokens needed to become the ultimate adventurer of Muskoka.”
It’s for anyone who has a love for Muskoka, from residents and cottagers to tourists. “We really associate Muskoka with cottage country and the board game culture,” says Henein. “We think it’s a really great way to embody and embrace the whole Muskoka experience in a box that you can also take home.”
“The passion and love we have for the place really drove the idea for the game and has sustained us through a year of working on it,” says Henein. “We are hopeful and excited that everyone in the Muskoka community will be able to experience it at some point.”
Muskoka: The Board Game will launch on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter on June 21, 2022. It will retail for $50, and in future will be available at canazeegames.ca as well as retail locations.
