Nordic spa proposal in Port Sydney receives preliminary approval

While testing for an appropriate water supply and other updates to technical studies are still pending, Planning Council gave the proponents of a Nordic spa in Port Sydney a green light to move forward.

At their March 11 meeting, councillors voted in favour of amending the Community Planning Permit to include a Nordic spa as a permitted use on the property.

Councillors were informed that local materials will be used wherever possible in the construction of the spa. Proponents also plan to use the property’s grade and follow the site’s natural drainage.

The council also heard that the estimated 20-acre property will need a multi-well system. To properly study the available water and the impact on adjacent wells, high-capacity wells will need to be drilled, and pump tests and recovery rates will need to be observed. “That’s a significant, significant expenditure, and it is, in my view, from my perspective, unreasonable to expect it at this stage. It is very reasonable to expect it at a future stage before construction, before final approval, and I believe that the Town has adequate stops in the process and thresholds that we can pass to do those studies, and that is the plan,” said Jon Morton with Greyston Project Management.

Councillor Scott Morrison said he is encouraged by the professionals working on the project. He emphasized that while the project does not have final approval and the applicant would still have to provide the studies and information requested by planning staff, approving the zoning would be a first step to ensure the applicant is not discouraged.

Planning Council agreed and approved the use.
