Number of municipal employees on the ‘Sunshine List’ increases across Muskoka

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996 requires organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to make public, by March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries, and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.

The act applies to organizations such as the Government of Ontario, Crown Agencies, Municipalities, Hospitals, Boards of Public Health, School Boards, Universities, Colleges, Ontario Power Generation, and other public sector employers who receive a significant level of funding from the provincial government.

Local organizations in the disclosure include the District of Muskoka and lower-tier municipalities. Below are the number of employees on the list per municipality for 2024 compared to 2019.

The District of Muskoka: (2021 census: estimated year-round population 66,674).

The District ‘Sunshine List’ has been steadily growing. In 2019, there were just 39 employees earning $100,000 or more plus benefits compared to 124 employees in 2024.

Muskoka Towns

Huntsville (2021 census data: estimated population 21,147).

In 2024, there were 21 employees in the Town of Huntsville making $100,000 or more plus benefits, compared to nine in 2019.

Bracebridge (According to 2021 census data, estimated population was 17,305)

In 2024, there were 21 employees at the Town of Bracebridge making $100,000 or more plus benefits compared to eight in 2019.

Gravenhurst (2021 census data: estimated population was 13,157)

In 2024, there were 20 employees at the Town of Gravenhurst making $100,000 or more plus benefits compared to seven in 2019.

Muskoka Townships

Township of Lake of Bays (2021 census data: estimated population was 3,759)

In 2024, there were 11 employees at the Township of Lake of Bays making $100,000 or more plus benefits compared to seven in 2019.

Township of Muskoka Lakes (According to 2021 census data, estimated population was 7,652)

In 2024, there were 16 employees at the Township of Muskoka Lakes making $100,000 or more plus benefits compared to seven in 2019.

Township of Georgian Bay (According to 2021 census data, the estimated population was 3,441)

In 2024, there were 21 employees at the Township of Georgian Bay making $100,000 or more plus benefits compared to five in 2019.
