The Huntsville Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is conducting a homicide investigation following a barricaded person incident in the Town of Huntsville.
On October 25, 2024, shortly before 9:00 p.m., officers of the Huntsville OPP responded to a barricaded person incident after receiving a report of a shooting at a residence on Highview Drive. Roads in the surrounding area were closed to ensure public safety.
Three individuals, including the armed individual, were located deceased.
There is no threat to public safety. However, residents in the area of Highview Drive should expect to see a large police presence throughout the weekend.
The investigation is ongoing by the Muskoka Crime Unit under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit, Central Region Emergency Response Team and Canine Unit, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
As a result of the officers’ interaction with the barricaded person, the OPP has notified the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) which has invoked its mandate.
From the Special Investigations Unit
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 52-year-old man today in Huntsville.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
At approximately 9 p.m. on October 25, 2024, the man contacted police and advised that he had harmed two family members inside a Huntsville residence, and that he was in possession of weapons.
The Ontario Provincial Police deployed a response team of crisis negotiators and the Emergency Response Team (ERT). The officers set up a perimeter around the home and were able to communicate with the man over the phone.
Shortly after communication stopped, a drone was sent into the home to conduct a search of the residence. The bodies of two deceased women were located, as was the body of a deceased man.
Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for Monday.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
