SUMMARY:Bestselling Author Shelly Sanders to Lead Inspiring Workshop on Crafting Compelling Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Here’s a hands-on opportunity for writers to learn from bestselling author\, Shelly Sandersr! On Saturday\, May 30\, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm\, writers of all levels are invited to an engaging and immersive workshop with historical novelist Shelly Sanders\, whose powerful storytelling brings overlooked histories—and the women within them—to vivid life. \n“How to Write a Bestselling Novel\,” is designed for writers across all genres who want to deepen their storytelling and create emotionally resonant narratives. Drawing on her experience as a journalist and award-winning author\, Sanders will guide participants through the delicate balance of weaving historical detail without overwhelming character or plot. \nParticipants will take part in two in-session writing exercises focused on strengthening emotional depth through voice\, conflict\, intuition\, and dialogue. A thoughtfully designed take-home exercise will further support writers in developing a compelling character arc—one that reflects meaningful interior growth as the story unfolds. \nShelly Sanders is the acclaimed author of bestselling novels including The Night Sparrow and Daughters of the Occupation\, as well as three celebrated young adult titles. Her forthcoming novel\, The Night Witches\, will be published by HarperCollins on November 10\, 2026. Known for her authenticity and emotional depth\, Sanders has contributed essays to leading literary platforms such as Writer’s Digest and LitHub\, and has led workshops at respected institutions including the Virginia Holocaust Museum. SUMMARY:Detective to Author: The Realities Behind Crime Fiction with Author\, Desmond P. Ryan
DESCRIPTION:Join Muskoka Authors Association on Thursday\, June 12 for an exciting presentation by crime fiction writer\, Desmond P. Ryan. Ryan will share stories and insights from almost thirty years of experience as a Toronto Police detective\, exploring how real-life investigations and police work have influenced his crime fiction writing. Drawing from firsthand experience\, Desmond will discuss how the details of criminal investigations—from procedure to human behavior—shape stories that connect with readers. \nThrough The Mike O’Shea Series\, a gripping police procedural\, Desmond brings the authenticity of detective work to life\, rooted in real-world details. On the lighter side\, A Pint of Trouble takes readers into the world of cozy mysteries\, where a mildly Machiavellian amateur sleuth solves murders with humor and charm. \nThis talk will offer a unique behind-the-scenes look at the balance between fact and fiction\, showing how firsthand knowledge of police work can create both intense\, realistic thrillers and fun\, character-driven mysteries. Whether you’re a writer\, reader\, or just curious about the link between fact and fiction\, you’ll walk away with new insights into the art of crafting crime fiction that resonates with authenticity\, no matter the tone. \nAs a police detective\, Ryan worked in some of the city’s toughest and most challenging neighborhoods. His experience on the frontlines of law enforcement—dealing with everything from routine investigations to high-risk operations—gives his crime fiction a raw\, unflinching authenticity. Whether he’s digging into the dark\, gritty world of policing in The Mike O’Shea Series or spinning a more offbeat mystery in A Pint of Trouble\, Desmond Ryan’s writing pulls no punches. His stories reflect the harsh realities of crime\, the toll it takes on those who fight it\, and the flawed humanity of everyone involved. Desmond Ryan’s characters—complicated\, sometimes broken\, but always real—are shaped by years spent on the streets\, making his books as hard-edged as the world they depict. \nLocation: Bracebridge United Church\, 46 Dominion Street\, Bracebridge\, lower level. Enter by door on the southside driveway. \nTime: 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm \nFee: MAA Members: Free\, Non-Members: $20 \nFor more information and to register\, Please email your contact information and etransfer payment to info@muskokaauthors.ca. \nYou can also reach out for more information\, by contacting David Bruce Patterson at 705-801-8074
