Plant Based Treaty Advocates Ask Gravenhurst to Endorse Global Initiative

Gravenhurst council heard a presentation this week from Anita Krajnic of the Plant Based Treaty initiative, who urged the town to endorse a global call for stronger climate action through plant-based food systems.

Krajnic outlined the aims of the international campaign, which describes itself as a “grassroots initiative creating bottom-up pressure for the negotiation of a global Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the UNFCCC Paris Agreement.” The proposed treaty focuses on placing food systems at the centre of climate strategy, addressing the environmental impacts of animal agriculture, and promoting a shift toward sustainable plant-based diets.

According to the organization, the initiative seeks to halt ecosystem degradation linked to current food production practices, restore biodiversity, and encourage national governments to negotiate an international agreement that would reduce emissions and protect critical natural systems.

Krajnic noted that support for the initiative continues to grow, with endorsements from Paul McCartney, several Nobel laureates, and more than 200 teams operating in 50 countries. Ontario already hosts several local groups involved in the movement. She also pointed to the risks of surpassing 1.5°C of global warming, including coral reef loss and accelerated glacier melt, and encouraged actions such as switching to plant-based milks.

The organization formally asked the Town of Gravenhurst to add its name to the list of municipal endorsers.

Mayor Heidi Lorenz, who noted she is a long-time vegetarian, thanked Krajnic for the presentation. She said council will wait for public input before considering any potential endorsement. Councillors appeared generally supportive and raised a number of questions during the delegation.

Lorenz closed the discussion by thanking the Plant Based Treaty advocates for bringing the information forward.
