Poilievre appoints Aitchison as Housing and Diversity and Inclusion critic

Parry Sound-Muskoka Member of Parliament Scott Aitchison has been named to the Official Opposition’s Shadow Cabinet.

Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Poilievre appointed Aitchison as the Party’s Shadow Minister for Housing and Diversity and Inclusion.

“Under Pierre Poilievre’s leadership, I will work with Canadians all across the country to bring forward real reforms to make the dream of home ownership attainable again, while continuing to hold the Trudeau government to account for its failure,” said Aitchison.  “Canada’s housing crisis requires urgent and sustained action to fix this mess. First time home buyers, whether young Canadians or new immigrants, are being shut out of the Canadian dream by this Liberal government whose actions continue to make this crisis worse.”

Aitchison said the housing crisis affects marginalized communities most “and we need to offer a hand up to realize the equality of opportunity in Canada. Every single Canadian deserves the dignity of a safe bed to sleep in while we work to address long-term challenges.”

He said Canada has the fewest homes per capita among the G7. “When the Trudeau Liberals took office in 2015, the average cost of a home in Canada was $413,000, and by the end of 2021, that price jumped to $811,700 — a 97% increase. This threatens Canada’s ability to attract new business, skilled labour, and most importantly, creates housing insecurity for millions of Canadians from coast to coast to coast.”

He said as a former mayor he understands the importance of building consensus to get new housing built. Aitchison added that federal leadership is required to remove the roadblocks that stop development while incentivizing substantial increases in the supply of all housing types.

“In addition to housing, we know Canada’s best tradition is welcoming people of all creeds and cultures from around the world to contribute to our country. I look forward to working with Canadians to renew this tradition and to remove barriers that are holding too many Canadians back.”

“As Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has said:

‘We will restore Canada’s promise — in a country where it does not matter who you love or if your name is Smith or Singh; Martin or Mohammad, Chang or Charles.

A country where the dreamer, the farmer, the worker, the entrepreneur, the survivor — the ones who get knocked down, but keep getting up and keep going — can achieve their purpose”

Aitchison was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2019, served in Shadow Cabinet as the Labour critic after being re-elected in 2021, and was a candidate in the Conservative Party Leadership Race in 2022. Aitchison’s appointment as Shadow Minister for Housing and Diversity and Inclusion is effective immediately.
