A convicted drug dealer added to his current sentence recently after being caught with cannabis.
Bracebridge court heard that George Athanasiou, 29, of Seguin is currently serving out a nine-year sentence at Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst.
On January 25, 2022, staff were checking his cell when Athanasiou admitted to having contraband. He was found with a water pipe and 21.4 grams of marijuana.
According to a 2018 press release from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Athanasiou was formerly a “prolific drug trafficker” and one of the largest fentanyl vendors in Canada.
The announcement said the four individuals either operated a darknet market vendor account(s) or functioned as so-called “couriers” essential to the operation, which has operated under the name “Mr Hotsauce”. Athanasiou, 25, seemingly functioned as the primary conspirator and account owner, according to the press release.
In a separate incident later the same year police executed a search warrant at a hotel room in Niagara Falls and seized $27,000 worth of heroin and crystal meth and more than $11,400 in cash.
In that incident, Athanasiou pleaded guilty to several charges including possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking.
For his latest offence at Beaver Creek, Athanasiou was sentenced to an extra 60 days in jail on top of his current sentence.
