The Town of Bracebridge took another step towards the creation of a weight room/wellness centre during the latest general committee meeting.
On Tuesday, councillors awarded a contract of $148,744 for the design, procurement and installation of fitness equipment and flooring for the new Kubota North Wellness Centre, which is to be located in the Bracebridge Sportsplex. Fitness equipment was specified to be inclusive of free weights, selectorized machines, and functional training space with rig implementation.
The new facility will occupy the current auditorium, with construction slated for this fall. Half of the auditorium will transform into a community room, while the other half will house the Kubota North Wellness Centre, scheduled to open in December.
In May the Town announced that Kubota North was sponsoring the new Sportsplex wellness centre with a $100,000 contribution over 15 years.
Then on July 10 council awarded a contract for the Sportsplex Auditorium retrofit to Bradanick Construction for $327,538 to renovate the existing Sportsplex Auditorium to become two smaller rooms, one to accommodate the Wellness Centre and one to accommodate a multipurpose room.
The Wellness Centre, accessible to patrons aged 10 and up, will feature free weights, cardio equipment, a functional training area, and personal training services.

Although I will be happy to have use of the wellness centre being proposed I am surprised at the costs involved. That said, it has been difficult accessing the weight room because it is closed during weekdays for school use and , therefore, inconvenient for seniors. I enjoy strength training and it will be a welcome change to be able to use the equipment during the day. Thank you for that.!

Almost $500,000 for this! What’s going on in Bracebridge? Is money growing on trees in Muskoka especially when there are local businesses who have fitness and training equipment and are trying to make a living.
The Town finances are in enough of a mess from the almost $100 million dollar cost overrun (construction plus interest payments) on the arena. Now we have money blown on a fitness room, useless deck in the woods at Woodchester ($100,000) and landscaping job costing $56,000 for the already nicely landscaped roundabout . Who comes up with this? Why is Town Council approving this?
