In a rare occurrence, a delegation appeared at the latest Gravenhurst Town Council meeting not to request anything but to offer something – the gift of music.
The Highway 11 Ukulele Players appeared at council to provide background on their organization and to offer a rousing rendition of the Beach Boys’ classic Sloop John B.
“That’s a first,” remarked Mayor Heidi Lorenz of the impromptu performance.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Karen Ross said the Highway 11 Ukulele Players has an official membership of 120 members stretching from Huntsville to Barrie., although they typically have an active roster of between 40 and 50 players.
Ross said the group incorporates several smaller groups from the Highway 11 corridor who saw membership drop off during the pandemic.
They decided to meet in Gravenhurst as it is the rough geographic centre of the corridor. They have spent the past two winters meeting in the Sawdust City event space and summers at the Muskoka Wharf (although this summer they might have to move some meetings to Gull Lake Park if construction necessitates. The Wharf practices/concerts are free of charge and take place Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.
The group will also play Canada Day at Gull Lake Park and as part of the Gravenhurst autumn arts tour.
New members are always welcome, said Ross.
