“Alfred James Hammond ,1874 to 1962. Alf with the axe,the sawyers are unidentified. An English home boy he came to Muskoka and lived with a family named Smith, whose name he used until applying for a marriage licence and had to use the name on his birth certificate. He married Margaret Gavin and worked for her family who were lumbermen. One hundred years ago he bought an acreage in McLean township on the South Branch of the Muskoka River. This is now in Bracebridge on the Colony Road. He built summer cabins on the river for his daughters one of which still exists and is owned by a descendant. My grandfather Harold Hammond was one of his sons.”
