As recounted on the resort’s official website, Charles Minett first arrived in Muskoka in 1869, establishing a humble log cabin that would eventually become the North Lodge. As the Minett family flourished, this initial structure could no longer accommodate them, leading to the construction of a larger frame house that would evolve into the main hotel as travelers flocked to experience the famed Minett hospitality. Charles’ background in carpentry proved invaluable in this rugged new territory, and alongside the challenges of homesteading, he launched a robust boat-building enterprise.
The legacy of Levelands House, as it became known, remained firmly in the hands of the Minett family from its inception until 1953. The resort was inherited by Charles’ son, Seymour Arthur, in 1902, who expertly managed the hotel for an impressive 51 years. In 1953, the operation transitioned to Ted and Laura Wright, who took the reins before the resort was ultimately purchased by close family friends Bob and Fran Cornell in late 1969.
