In the 1940s, Bracebridge was a growing town in the heart of Muskoka, marked by the impact of World War II, a developing tourism industry, and a community with a mix of local businesses and residents. The town was a center for local commerce, with a thriving main street that attracted shoppers from surrounding areas. Some businesses included a cancer clinic run by Rene Caisse, a local pool hall, and primitive summer cabins catering to vacationers, such as Drumkerry Cabins which offered views of the river and steamboat dock
