Wayback Wednesday: Rubberset Factory, Gravenhurst

From the Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre:

🙌THE RUBBERSET FACTORY – 1920 to 1993🙌

At its height, Gravenhurst was a manufacturing giant with the Rubberset Factory turning out 10,000 brush handles per day used for paint brushes, shaving brushes and tooth brushes. Almost every family in Gravenhurst had someone working at the factory. It was not only a valuable employer of thousands of men and women for much of the last century — through wars and more — but it was a world-class manufacturer the small town was proud to be home to. Women in the 1920s were seldom found in factories making anything other than garments. But in Gravenhurst, the Rubberset factory began its operations with a number of women employees working in the bristle department making shaving brushes. Bristle hairs were imported – boar hair from China, ox hair from Australia and badger hair from Turkey.
