Wayback Wednesday: The Destruction of the Sagamo, 1969

This photo was posted by Carol Duke in Vintage Muskoka. It was taken by her husband.

Displacing 477 tons and standing 27 feet out of the water, the Sagamo was designed to provide a lavish experience for tourists arriving by train at the Muskoka Wharf.

It was launched in 1906 and began regular service in 1907. After a fire in 1925, it was rebuilt to be even more extravagant.

Retired in 1958, the ship was later used as a floating restaurant. In 1969, it was destroyed by a fire while being repainted.
