With 2024 in the books, South Muskoka Doppler is looking back on some of our most-read articles of the year that was.
Here are the three most-read commentary articles of 2024:
1. From Feb. 24 – Listen Up! The other shoe has dropped
“Muskoka Algonquin Health Care (MACH) has certainly stirred things up this past week with their announcement of plans for future hospital care in Muskoka and East Parry Sound.
There can be no question that this proposal is different from that which was promised several years ago, and it is understandable that some people will have their noses out of joint.
But it is also time for a reality check.”

2. From Feb. 12 – Letters: Don’t pass the buck on South Muskoka’s healthcare
“Let us start by saying unequivocally, we need to support our health care workers. It must, we hope, be obvious that health care is the most important task that the government has. I’m sure you can agree that it is currently in need of serious repair.
Now the tough part. What are you and the other levels of our elected government going to do about it?
We understand it is a complex problem but that should not deter your efforts to fix it. The massive majority of your constituents are clearly disappointed with the whole state of health care now.”

3. From Oct. 13 – Listen up! An important step forward
“Originally, the MAHC proposal allocated 139 beds to the Huntsville site for the services it was being asked to provide. As more beds were allocated to the Bracebridge site, initially from 14 to 36, the number of beds allocated to Huntsville was reduced to 121.
The one question that remains unanswered, at least to me, is whether, when these 18 beds were moved from Huntsville to the Bracebridge site, any hospital services that supported them moved with them. If so, what were they?”
