24th Annual Muskoka Escapades of Town Crying Competition, the longest of its kind in North America

On Saturday, August 9th, 2025, the 24th Annual Muskoka Escapades of Town Crying Competition was held in Bracebridge, the longest-running Town Crier competition in North America. This event was attended by eleven town criers and their escorts from across Ontario. It was a two-cry competition.

The first stage of the competition took place at Memorial Park during the bustling Farmers Market. Competitors delivered their proclamations, centred on the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Town of Bracebridge.  The second part of the competition was held at Santa’s Village, for the 24th consecutive year.  Participants shared their cries, focused on the 70th Anniversary of Santa Claus establishing the Village in 1955.

Santa Claus presented the winners with their well-deserved prizes donated by both venues. The combined scores from both locations determined the top town criers of the event, who were:

1st Place – Town Crier Louise Powell – Town of Whitby

2nd Place – Town Crier Daniel Richer – The National Capital Region of  Ottawa/Gatineau

3rd Place – Town Crier Bill McKee – Town of Uxbridge, Township of Scugog & City of Oshawa

The Muskoka Escapades of Town Crying Competition continues to be a cherished tradition that highlights the rich history and vibrant culture of Muskoka and Santa’s Village. The Hosts, Crier Bruce C. Kruger and Escort Lynn Kruger, of Bracebridge, extend their heartfelt thanks to all participants, sponsors, judges and attendees who helped make this event a great success.  As an added note, this year was truly memorable for Town Crier Bruce Kruger, celebrating his 25th year as the appointed official crier for the Town of Bracebridge and Santa’s Village.  Since commencing his duties, Bruce has cried in nine countries, presenting proclamations to Kings and Queens of three nations, Prime Ministers, Premiers, Governors, Lieutenant Governors, and many ambassadors, amongst other numerous dignitaries and international organizations.

Held in a supposedly run down dilapidated bandstand, that is a part of Bracebridge history/heritage. (Doesn’t look that run down in the picture). But do not worry. The criers will be able to perform in a $384,000 gazebo in the future. C’mon, just fix this bandstand and spend the bulk of the $384,000 on housing. And by the way, congratulations to the Town Criers.
