Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary and Wild For Life in Rosseau, along with various wildlife centers across Ontario, will soon provide essential meals for orphaned and injured animals, thanks to a substantial donation from Pet Valu.
The donation consists of 69 skids of dry dog food, amounting to over 21,000 kilograms, and is set to benefit animals such as black bears, wolves, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and possums in wildlife facilities throughout the province, including those located in Thunder Bay, Huntsville, Barrie, Ottawa, Kingston, Hamilton, and London. This donation marks a significant milestone for Ontario Wildlife Rescue, which is receiving the largest single food contribution in its history.
Sandy Donald, Director of Ontario Wildlife Rescue, stated, “This is the biggest single food donation Ontario Wildlife Rescue has ever received, and it is going to have a significant and direct impact. Wildlife centers do not receive government support, making food costs one of their major expenses. Being able to redirect funds for food purchases will allow them to assist more animals in need. We appreciate Pet Valu’s considerable donation.”
Dry dog food is often preferred in wildlife rehabilitation centers for its balanced nutrition and appeal to various scavenging animals. Black bears, in particular, will benefit, as the food satisfies their high caloric needs.
Donald encourages the public to contact wildlife centers directly if they come across injured or orphaned wildlife, as humane societies and animal control agencies are not appropriately licensed to handle such cases.
