Earlier this year, construction contracts were issued for the reconstruction of a portion Glen Gordon Road and the Bala Falls Bridge in Bala.
The Bala Falls projecr includes repairs to the existing foundations, replacement of the superstructure and railings, and reconstruction of the approaches to the bridge. The work was expected to be completed by December, 2022.
According to the Muskoka Lakes Township, With the early arrival of winter conditions construction activities for the year have been terminated and are scheduled to re-commence in the spring of 2023.
At Glen Gordon Road the contractor was successful in completing blasting of the rock outcrops, realignment of the road and construction of the new road bed including installation of the protective barriers. The 2023 work program will see the completion of the project with the paving and shouldering of the road.
Work completed at the Bala Falls Bridge includes: rehabilitation of the piers and abutments, construction of the new superstructure and reconstruction of the approaches. In 2023, railings and guiderail will be installed as well as waterproofing and paving of the bridge deck and the approaches.
It is anticipated that both projects will be completed before the end of the second quarter of 2023. This will allow for both roads to be fully open and accessible in time for the busy cottage/tourist season.
In the interim Glen Gordon Road is open to traffic with a gravel road surface on this section of road. Bala Falls Road will remain closed to traffic for the winter season but access to individual properties will be maintained.
