On December 12, 2022, Bracebridge Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were conducting a Festive RIDE program on Manitoba Street near High Falls Rd in the Town of Bracebridge. At 11:52 p.m. a concerned member of the public called to report that an intoxicated male was driving on Manitoba Street directly towards High Falls Road. The suspect vehicle was located approaching the RIDE program at which time he failed to stop for police and proceeded to evade police by driving through the RIDE check. Officers were able to conduct a traffic stop a short distance away and as a result, 40-year-old John BALLANTINE of Utterson, ON, with the following:
- Impaired Operation of a Vehicle CC 320.14(1)(a)
- Over 80 CC 320.14(1)(b)
- Fail to stop for Police HTA 216(1)
- Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available LLCA 42(1)(b)
He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on January 10, 2023, to answer to his charges. Furthermore, his vehicle has been impounded.
The Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign is an annual police enforcement and education initiative aimed at taking impaired drivers off Ontario roads during the holiday season. This year’s OPP Festive RIDE Campaign runs from November 17, 2022, to January 2, 2023.
