Bracebridge Fire Chief Medley announces retirement

After 45 years with the Bracebridge Fire Department, Chief Murray Medley has decided to call it a career.

On February 13, 2023, Medley announced his retirement as Chief, effective June 30, 2023.

Medley, who celebrated his 70th birthday last week, has been with the department since he signed on as a volunteer in 1978. He’s been the chief of the department for the past 23 years.

Tomorrow Bracebridge Town council will meet to begin the process of filling Medley’s considerable shoes.

During a special general committee meeting, council will consider a motion to retain the services of Waterhouse Executive Search to coordinate the recruitment and selection of the Director of EmergencyServices/Fire Chief at a cost of $19,500, plus HST and ancillary expenses.

They’ll also consider the creation of an ad hoc recruitment committee to help fill the position.

Although it is anticipated that Medley’s last day working will be at the end of May 2023, staff indicate the remaining time will be taken as vacation.

Good for you Murray! 40 plus years ago I remember, you, my Dad and many other boys of the BFD, lights and siren blazing and me in awe, roll out of the 2 bay station underneath the town hall! You have transitioned through and into the 3rd Station house as time moved on and the town grew! My have times changed! You have served the town well, enjoy the retirement, it is mighty sweet times that you and Karen will enjoy! Safe times!
Carry On! Safe day to all first responders and those making it work for the better of all!
