Bracebridge is looking for a little help paying the bills associated with this spring’s ice storm.
During the latest meeting of the Bracebridge General Committee, council members examined the After Action Report for the 2025 Ice Storm, alongside the application for the Municipal Ice Storm Assistance (MISA) Program.
A significant storm struck central and eastern Ontario from March 28 to 30, 2025, delivering two extended periods of freezing rain. Muskoka faced roughly 35 hours of freezing rain, with ice accumulations exceeding 25 mm, leading to hazardous conditions and widespread damage.
In the immediate aftermath of the storm, Bracebridge’s rural areas dealt with prolonged power outages and significant damage to power infrastructure, which included the need to replace over 220 Hydro One-owned poles in Muskoka. Additionally, from March 28 to 31, the Fire Department responded to 56 emergency calls, primarily related to downed power lines and public safety issues.
On March 30, 2025, the Acting Director of Public Works for the Town of Bracebridge officially declared a Significant Weather Event due to the storm’s hazardous aftermath. Shortly thereafter, the District of Muskoka announced a State of Emergency.
Current assessments indicate that the Town is facing approximately $470,000 in storm-related expenses. These costs largely stem from third-party contractor services for debris removal and arborist work contracted by the Public Works Department.
After reviewing the MISA program guidelines, staff concluded that the Town has incurred notable extra costs that would be eligible for assistance under the program. Consequently, the council has unanimously agreed to adopt a resolution seeking aid through the MISA program and to prepare the full application package ahead of the October 31, 2025, submission deadline.
