Bracebridge to Consider New Waste Depot

A staff report recommending a five-year Licence of Occupation for a new waste depot site will be brought before the Town of Bracebridge General Committee on Dec. 2.

The report, prepared by Scott Clayton, Director of Public Works, recommends the town enter into an agreement with the District Municipality of Muskoka to allow the exclusive use of a portion of town-owned land abutting 1770 Beaumont Drive for the development of a new residential waste depot.

If approved, the licence would allow the district to use the land for five years to operate the depot. At the end of the term, both parties would review the success of the site and any operational impacts. Should the depot prove successful, the district may then seek to purchase the lands in accordance with the town’s land disposition policies.

For several years, the district’s Engineering and Public Works Department has worked to expand waste collection services, including Sunday lakeside collection for island and seasonal residents at the Beaumont Drive wharf. The new depot would be the next phase of that expansion and would serve residents of Bracebridge.

The proposed site is located on underutilized town land that currently includes the Browning Island Parking Lot, which is used by island residents and the public accessing Lake Muskoka. The lot also accommodates boat and snowmobile trailer storage.

Town staff previously expressed concerns about public safety, parking impacts, and site access. As a result, the district completed feasibility work, and staff from both municipalities collaborated on design details, including access points, fencing, bin placement, an attendant shelter, and resurfacing of the parking area.

All bins? No open dump? Hours open? For use by residents on Beaumont and islands? Access cards?
