From the office of Scott Aitchison:
Scott Aitchison, Member of Parliament and Candidate for Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, has announced as Prime Minister, Canada would recognize Taiwan and officially establish diplomatic relations to advance peace and prosperity throughout the Asia-Pacific and around the world. Canada would also renew its commitment to regional partners in an effort to strengthen the defence of freedom, democracy, and shared values.
“Taiwan is an independent and sovereign country, a beacon of openness, democracy, respect for human rights, and a case study in the benefits of a market-based economy open to trading with the world,” said Scott Aitchison. “It is time for Canada to finally recognize this reality.”
Under Canada’s One China policy, the Canadian Government does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state and does not maintain official, government-to-government relations. “For the better part of 50 years, Canada’s and Western foreign policy was premised on the basis that increased trade and prosperity with China would lead to greater adherence to human rights and liberalization of communism’s harsh edges,” said Scott Aitchison. “We were wrong.”
Scott Aitchison also announced he would work with Canada’s allies and trade partners to welcome Taiwan into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and support the country’s efforts to join U.N. specialized agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO), obtain observer status at INTERPOL, and the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).
Scott Aitchison unveiled this important position as part of his foreign policy plan: Real Leadership on the World Stage. His farsighted initiative includes three priorities for defending and advancing Canada’s interests around the world:
- Re-establish Canada’s commitment to upholding global security.
- Advance economic opportunities and prosperity with trading partners.
- Defend human rights and democratic governance around the world.
By promoting trade and economic interests through the CPTPP, while working with Canada’s partners in the Asia-Pacific, Canadians can enjoy greater prosperity and security, while bolstering support for human rights around the world.
