The organization behind the historic RMS Segwun is inviting residents and businesses to help preserve one of Canada’s most recognizable heritage vessels through a community fundraising campaign supporting a $3 million restoration and modernization project.
Branded “Come Aboard,” the campaign aims to attract more than 1,000 individual and corporate supporters to help complete the work, which is scheduled to finish by Aug. 31, 2026.
Canada’s Living Legend, the RMS Segwun has been sailing the Muskoka lakes for more than 139 years and is recognized as the oldest operating steam-powered vessel in North America. It is also one of only two Royal Mail Ships still operating in the world.
Muskoka Steamships Association say the restoration is about more than routine maintenance. The project is intended to preserve a national historic treasure while ensuring the iconic steamship continues carrying passengers for decades to come.
Significant funding has already been secured through federal and provincial government support, as well as private donations. The new campaign is focused on encouraging broad community participation rather than relying on a handful of major donors.
All contributions are appreciated, $25.00 and over will receive tax receipts. Donation levels ranging from $100 (Crew Member Tier) to $20,000 or more for the Captain’s Circle Tier will receive a limited-edition RMS Segwun cap and recognition on a permanent donor board at the Muskoka Wharf. Those contributing $5,000 or more will also be invited, along with a guest, to a special ‘Celebrating Segwun and Relaunching a Legend’ event.
Businesses can also participate through sponsorship opportunities that include promotional benefits, event signage and social media recognition.
Supporters say preserving the Segwun is about protecting an important piece of Muskoka’s history and ensuring the vessel continues to serve as both a tourism attraction and a symbol of the region’s heritage for future generations.
