William “Bill” Roy Edwards – February 1, 1924 ~ August 7, 2021 (age 97)

Bill was a Toronto boy through and through. However, his heart was always at Kahshe Lake and he resided for many years in the Town of Gravenhurst, Muskoka.

Bill was Marion’s beloved husband for 47 years. He will be missed by his children, David (Margaret) Edwards, Jill (William) Brown, Ross (Jane) Edwards and Carol (Lee) Lane. He will also be fondly remembered by nephew, Peter and nieces Lynda and Diane and their partners.

Bill was so proud of his children and their partners, but was thankful that his long life allowed him to enjoy his grandchildren and watch them grow into adulthood and see them prosper. They are Diana (Mark), Christopher (Colleen), Blake (Jodi), Erin (Adam), Gregory (Catherine), Lauren, and Jasmine (Jaxson).

His greatest joy was found in his great grandchildren, Clayton, Claire, Callie, Connor, Eleanor, Maya, Reed and Rory.

Bill was predeceased by parents George and Minnie Edwards, his sisters Ruth and Phyllis.

Bill was a man of strong opinion and great strength of character. He was a great and loyal friend and a loving man. Like many of his generation, he was hard working, well respected and honest to a fault. He was especially proud of the fact that he was never out of work a day in his life. He ended his long career as Executive Vice President of Advertising Agency R.T. Kelley in Hamilton, Ontario.

He takes a piece of our hearts with him but we were all so fortunate to have him in our lives for so long. He did it “His Way”.

William “Bill” Raymond Barber- September 21, 1937 ~ August 9, 2021 (age 83)

The family sadly announces the death of Bill, on Monday, August 9, 2021, in his 84th year. Beloved husband of Nancy (nee Brunton). Loving father of Heather Hill, Patty Jones and husband Glenn. Most proud grandfather of Connor Jones, Nicholas Hill, Lachlan Hill, Cooper Hill, and Vanessa Jones. Brother-in–law of Barbara Bowlby (nee Brunton) and wife Mary Jo Thompson, and John Brunton and wife Franny. Dear uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews, and fondly remembered by many friends.

Bill was first and foremost a family man. He grew up in Toronto and attended De La Salle College and Ryerson College (University) where he completed his Architectural Technology course. He worked for many Architectural firms in Toronto before moving to Muskoka where he loved designing boathouses and cottages on the Lakes. Muskoka was in his blood after spending summers at Elgin House as a child, then buying a cottage on Lake Joseph with Nancy for their family to enjoy during the summer. Eventually Bill and Nancy made Muskoka their permanent home so that their family and grandchildren could enjoy the same wonderful experience all year long.

Bill loved golfing at the MLGCC with friends over the years and enjoyed sitting on the patio with his family for lunch or enjoying dinner in the dining room with extended family and friends. Few may have also known that Bill loved his train set that he built over many years.

Special thanks for the kind and excellent care received at Soldiers Memorial Hospital from the Kidney Care Dialysis team over the past many years as well as during his last days.

In keeping with Bill’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private celebration of Bill’s life will take place at a later date.

Mary Helen Allen – March 10, 1949 ~ August 9, 2021 (age 72)

Passed away at home, surrounded by loved ones, on Monday, August 9, 2021. She was in her 73rd year. Mary was the beloved wife of Ken Allen. Loving mother of Holly Allen (Mike Lord), Brooke Allen (Sean Gostick), and Nancy Kroeger. Cherished grandmother of Stephen Bradley, Joshua Tucker, Graeme Allen, Amelia Dalgleish, and Conner Hill. Great-grandmother of Saraia Allan, and Savanna Bradley. Dear sister of John Wells, Tim Crandall, June Sym, Maureen Lambert, Jeannie McHardy, and Ruth Hodgins.

Marjorie Effie (Matthias) Joselin – October 23, 1927 ~ August 2, 2021 (age 93)

Passed away on Monday, August 2, 2021, at Muskoka Shores Care Community, at the age of 93. Marjorie was the beloved wife of William (Bill) Thomas Joselin who predeceased her in 1996.

Cherished mother of Brenda (John) Matt, Yvonne Stewart and Jim (Kathy) Joselin.  Loving grandmother of Tim, Eric, Brent, Camille, and Michelle and great grandmother of Peter and Jordyn. 

Predeceased by her siblings Howard (Bud), Gertrude, Winifred and Elmer. Marjorie was born and married in Matthiasville. She later moved to Bracebridge with her husband and three children. She worked for 10 years at the Motor Lamp (Rockwell) in addition to being a homemaker. She enjoyed many hobbies including reading, gardening, painting, knitting, sewing, crossword puzzling and playing piano. She had a great love for music and a smile for all those she met. She loved animals and no squirrel, blue jay or cat in the neighbourhood would go unfed.

She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

In keeping with Marjorie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. An Internment of Ashes at St. Thomas Cemetery, in Bracebridge, will be held at a later date.

Violet Elizabeth ‘Betty’ (nee Smith) Flaherty (formerly Nelson) – July 20, 1934 ~ August 1, 2021 (age 87)

‘Betty’ Flaherty (nee Smith) (formerly Nelson) at Castle Peak Retirement Residence in Bracebridge on August 1, 2021. Betty was the beloved wife and best friend of Gerry and she felt blessed for the love, friendship, and support of her extended family. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her sons; Rick (Sue), Tom (Brenda) Nelson and her stepchildren; Scott Flaherty, and Jan (Mike) Donovan. Her grandchildren; Jessica (Ricky), Melanie, Jamie (Eric), Michael (Anna), and great-grandchildren; Ravina, Rian, Marcus, Mikayla, Lachlan, and Lucy who will also sorely miss their grandmother! Betty also leaves her siblings; Jack (Pearl) Smith, Gwen (Sam D) Cochrane, and Bill (Cathy Hansen) who also mourn their loss.

Betty was raised in Hamilton and had a busy career as office Manager/accountant at Hamilton Lumber. Peter Lush & Associates as well as owning a Lighting store. She Joined Gerry at the Gerald Flaherty Agency Ltd. in Hamilton before they retired to live on the shores of Lake Muskoka in Gravenhurst. Betty fell in Love with Muskoka and enjoyed her involvement in her Church, The Probus Club and The Muskoka Concert Association. These activities as well as Bridge and Golf brought her many new friends and hours of enjoyment! She was particularly proud of the Paul Harris Fellowship award that was presented to her by the Gravenhurst Rotary Club! As the Family Historian, Betty also enjoyed researching her ancestors and those of the Flaherty family.

The Family will receive friends at Trinity United Church on Saturday, September 18, 2021 from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. with Rev. Carol-Ann Chapman, Rev. Maggie Keats and Rev. Johann Hills officiating. Following the service, the Family invites you to join them for refreshments and share memories. Beth Kathleen (Ball) Speicher – October 22, 1930 ~ August 4, 2021 (age 90)

Beth was a lifelong partner to Mackenzie “King” Speicher, mother to Leigh (Rob), Kevin (Donna) and Shawn (Kevin); Cherished grandmother and great-grandmother to Thom (Kate) and Connor, Korey (Cindy) and Oliver, Edward (Meghan) and Elizabeth, Aaron, Reed, Zach, Troy, Caitlin (Kevin) and baby.

She was born to Burton and Dorothy Ball, and a sister to Keith, Douglas and Lois. Born in Bracebridge and raised in Milford Bay, her life journeys took her beyond Huckleberry Rock, relocating several times throughout Ontario and returning full circle to Muskoka. With every move across the province, she was the strength and balance for her family.

Beth especially enjoyed watching all eight of her grandchildren play hockey and was a familiar face in many arenas. She was an avid reader, knitter, sports enthusiast and would follow the political election results from any part of the country, usually with a strong opinion. One of her most cherished pastimes was to trace the family history of those who have gone before us.

Her doors were always open to friend and family, and the smells of freshly made pies and butter tarts were commonplace. One of the important lessons of life, is that a fruit pie will only be successful if it boils over.

Beth will be dearly missed, but as her final farewell in her 91st year, she would say “I’m outa here”.

Christopher Thomas McLauchlan – May 10, 1974 ~ July 25, 2021 (age 47)

Beloved brother of Laura and Richard McLauchan, cherished by his nieces Danielle McLauchlan-Payne and Emma Charles, and his nephew Tristan Charles. He will profoundly be missed by his dog Ava, who was adopted from the OSPCA.

In May of 2020, Chris unfortunately lost his vision and became legally blind. Due to the pandemic, resources and in-person support for his new-found disability and mental health was very limited. His family and loved ones tried to aid and advocate for him, but sadly he passed away peacefully on July 25th, 2021.

Moving forward, we hope those who are suffering from catastrophic crises get the immediate help and attention they deserve. He was employed at Purolator for over 25 years and will be remembered by co-workers and customers for his quick wit and wicked sense of humour.

Behind his fierce demeanor, imposing size, and tattooed sleeves he was a kind, selfless man with a heart of gold who was there for those in need.

In keeping with Chris’ wishes, cremation has taken place.  A Celebration of Life is to follow in the future.

Steven Edward Thompson – January 25, 1952 ~ July 28, 2021 (age 69)

Terry Ward – September 20, 1937 ~ July 27, 2021 (age 83)

Passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 in his 84th year. Terry was the beloved husband of the late Beverley Ann. Michael John McCallum – January 22, 1971 ~ July 23, 2021 (age 50)

Passed away at Huntsville District Memorial Hospital on Friday, July 23, 2021. Michael was the beloved son of Susan and Pres McCallum. Dear brother of Matthew (Amber). Kerry Donald Lamb – October 23, 1966 ~ July 18, 2021 (age 54)

Passed away peacefully in Huntsville hospital on July 18th, 2021 with loved ones by his side.

Kerry was the beloved friend of Jackie DeCaire. Loving father of Tyler Walker (Mercedes) and cherished Grandfather to Delilah and Zoraya of Clairmont, Alberta. Dear Brother of Kim Rudd and Brother-in-law Tom. Cherished Uncle of Stefanie Rudd-Sidawi (Ziyad) Ali & Kathy Rudd and Great Uncle of Morgan, Hobie, Avery and Baby Amira. Kerry is also survived by his Aunt Joye & Aunt Marilyn and many cousins, friends and the Goheen family.

A painter by trade, Kerry could talk for hours of his skills and many adventures. During COVD-19 as Kerry became housebound with his disability. He appreciated the text messages and phone calls from his family and friends. He especially enjoyed video phone calls from a few childhood friends. Kerry loved music and always had AC/DC playing in his CD player. Kerry enjoyed all sports and never missed a hockey game. He spoke often of golfing with Kim and Tom. He also enjoyed poker, cribbage, euchre and darts. His love of cooking was an everyday adventure, he loved his recipe books and had a few family secrets up his sleeve.

In recent years Kerry tried ATVing on the Moon River trails, enjoying the scenery from the cabin, all while being entertained by Canada Geese and other wildlife creatures. Loved by all who knew and understood him, a strong opinionated man set in his ways, a smart, kind fun loving man. To honour his wishes, there will be no formal service. Jane Anne (Boyer) Hay – September 22, 1946 ~ July 19, 2021 (age 74)

In her 75th year, Jane Anne Hay (nee Boyer) passed away suddenly at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, in the evening on Monday, July 19, 2021. Jane was the beloved wife of the late Thomas Hay. Loving mother to Chris Young (Shelley) of Cambridge, and Debbie Marling (Chris) of Bracebridge; step-mother to Ken Yates (Deb) of Oklahoma, and Tara Lee Blancher (David) of Gravenhurst. Cherished grandmother of Spencer and Connor Marling, Gavin Young; step-grandmother to Stephanie Blancher.  Great step-grandmother of Dawson.  Jane was the dear sister of Lynne (John) Parks, Margaret Boyer (Jed Hiltz), Rob Boyer (Rae-Anne), and George Boyer (Doreen); sister in-law of Dennis Hay (Sara), Stephen Hay (Janet), and the late Patricia Leonard (Ron), and Robin Hay.  Also predeceased by her parents the late Wilson and Dorothy Boyer.  Jane leaves behind her extended family, her endless number of cousins, nieces and nephews, her friends that felt like family, and the Young family, who all meant the world to her. 

Jane had a way of making everyone feel as though they were the closest to her and everyone had a place in her heart. The family would like to make a special thank you to Dr. Hemens and the kind staff at SMMH for their support through a difficult time.

Marya “Mary” Mandalena (Sebalj) Mataija – August 20, 1939 ~ July 21, 2021 (age 81)

Passed away peacefully on July 21, 2021, at Algonquin Grace Residential Hospice, in her 81st year. Beloved wife of the late Thomas Mataija. Dear mother of James, Steven (Wendy), and Lisa (Roger). Cherished Baka (grandmother) of Maximilian, Mya, and Isabella. Loving sister of Frank (Tanya), Anna, and the late Nevenka.

Mary was born on August 20, 1939, in Plesivica, Croatia (then Yugoslavia). These were difficult times, as WWII was about to begin. In later years, she worked as a nanny and also assisted the local midwife which is something that gave her great joy. Mary met her future husband, Tom, while he was travelling in Croatia. She immigrated to Canada, in 1966, where they married a few days later.

She lived the rest of her life, in Bracebridge, in the same home where everyone was always welcome. She cooked big meals and would make sure no one left her home hungry. She worked many years as a housekeeper at a local resort. She loved travelling and made many trips with dad and friends to the states for Croatian festivals and just pleasure. Mary loved children and doted on her grandkids and was always there to help take care of them. She was truly a people person, she loved seeing people, talking to people, and listening to their life stories.

Mary was a kind and genuine person, and she will be fondly remembered for the hospitality she showed everyone in her home.

We will miss her greatly.

David Albert Islip – June 28, 1946 ~ July 24, 2021 (age 75)

Passed away on July 24, 2021, in the early morning at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, in his 76th year. Beloved husband to Christine (nee Reeves) of 52 years. Cherished father of Scott Islip (Mary Ann), Derek Islip (Katie), Victoria Spalding, and Kevin Islip (Katherine). Loving grandfather of Ryan, Christopher, Andrew, Emerson, Harrison, Carter, Zachary, Claire, and Bradford.

David was an avid golfer. For the last 20 years, he was a member of the Port Carling Golf Club where he and the original four – Jack, John, the late Dan, and the late Paul – would spend their afternoons. He will be greatly missed by his extended family and friends. In keeping with David’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held with a Celebration of Life to follow in the future.

James Wilbert White

Iris Bandy

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom, Iris Bandy, on July 13, 2021, at Granite Ridge Retirement Residence (Gravenhurst, Ontario). 

Born at home in a small farming community, Alma Heights, near Thessalon, Ontario, she was the middle child of Mildred and Stirling Proud.  She was predeceased by her brothers Ken and Dale Proud.

She will forever be remembered as the loving mother of Susan Murdoch (Ken) and Sherry Smith (Rick).   Iris was a doting grandmother and will be sorely missed by Bryan and Jeff (Hollie) Murdoch, Carly Smith, Kristi (Peter) MacDonald and Lainie Smith (Ben).  Great-grandchildren Scout (Lemieux), Edie Iris (MacDonald), Paisley and Brynnley (Murdoch) who are too young to understand how much they were loved by a woman who treasured family.

Iris was the cherished and adored wife of Willard Bandy for 60 years. In retirement, they enjoyed travel, winters in Florida, curling, playing bridge and golf. Iris volunteered, made endless egg salad sandwiches for church functions and tended to their beautiful home and garden.

Iris was encouraged to train as a teacher and will be fondly remembered by those whose hearts and minds she touched.  A teacher never really knows how far their influence extends. Her kindness, humour and love will never be forgotten.  Mom made us realize our self-worth and made us feel important and worthy of her unconditional love.  We never, for a moment, felt otherwise.

Mom loved fashion, always had perfect hair and kept an immaculately clean house.  She and Dad had wonderful friends, enjoyed parties and many “happy hours”.  They loved to dance and were very skilled! It was a privilege, a joy and a blessing to have Iris as our Mom.  We are close as a family because of her.  Her Legacy will live on in each of her grandchildren.

 We would like to thank the entire staff of Granite Ridge Retirement Residence for the compassionate care shown to Mom.

Donald Scott Hodgins – October 23, 1956 ~ July 19, 2021 (age 64)

Passed away on Monday, July, 19, 2021 with his family by his side, after a long and brave battle with cancer. A family man with great patience and a caring soul for all he met. Cherished in return by those who knew and loved him.

Beloved husband of wife Lynne. Dearest Papa to daughters Jennifer Stothers, and Bonnie Young (deceased) grandchildren Sydney and Joshua Young. Brother-in-law Bill (Lynn) Wendorf, nephews Kurt, Neil, Stephen also great nephews, and great niece.

He will be sadly missed by his loyal friends and co-workers at Muskoka Window and Door, Jeff and Randy Hodges, his many friends at the Gravenhurst Horticultural Society, his special friends, Earl (deceased) and family, as well as his fuzzy family Merlin and Matilda. He had many long time friends, all of whom held him in high regard. A particular thank you to those who supported him with telephone calls and hugs of kindness and concern, during the Covid 19 pandemic. Faithful friends all.

Born in Toronto, to the late Eric and Kay Hodgins, 3rd of 4 siblings. A graduate of University of Toronto BSC 1977. He worked within the banking industry for many years before moving to Muskoka in the summer of 1992. He was keen to discover a more tranquil existence and a new life. It allowed him to smell the fresh air, enjoy the sunshine, and experience small town living. A boating enthusiast and a love of gardening sustained his desire and curiosity, he had an energy of having to be kept busy. He loved being in the kitchen, and was an avid cook, and his family and friends had the pleasure of the results.

Sincere gratitude to the Cancer Care Unit of Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. Doctors Kent Russel, and the many nurses who were so kind, understanding and professional in their care. Doctor Lam and staff at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Kidney Care Unit. A special thank you to his home care nurse Cristina, for her cheerful attitude and kind care.

Dr. Michael Krawetz – December 13, 1932 ~ July 16, 2021 (age 88)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bala’s beloved and last residing physician, Dr. Michael Krawetz. Doc or Dr. Mike as he was affectionately called was in his 89th year.

Survived by his loving partner Gail Bentley, and her sons Michael and David. Dear brother to Mary Tkachenko (Walter d.2012).

He will be remembered by his daughters-in-law Bonnie and Sharon. Michael was the cherished Grandfather of Steven Jr., Erin, Ben, and Addie.

Proud Great-Grandfather of Dylan, Cole, and Gage. Uncle to Ernest and Annie and Great Uncle to Ashton and Reid.

Predeceased by his first wife Helena Plens (d.1986); his sons Steven (d.2004) and Michael Jr. (d.2020), and his brother Eugene (d.1998).

Doctor Mike graduated Doctor of Medicine (cum laude) from Western University in 1957 and enjoyed a solo Family Practice for over 50 years.

He lived life to the fullest, loved unconditionally, was ALWAYS non-judgmental. He had no regrets.

Moving to Muskoka was a perfect fit. He loved to hunt and fish, enjoyed a good history book, and a cigar and bourbon. He was passionate about political issues. Mike had many wonderful trips over North America, Scotland, and Ukraine. His cabin at Lake Rufus was a favourite getaway with family and friends.

For many years, Doc took care of his community and the last little while Doc was taken care of by his community.

Mike had a Special “Angel Brigade” coordinated by his #1 Right Hand Girl Pam McDivitt. Mike loved his visits from Carol Geri, Diana, Lynn and Gay and was never disappointed with some amazing treats and meals from the Anglican Church women. He loved everyone and everyone loved him—such a Special Man and so dearly loved.

Dr. Mike also had a wonderful group of healthcare providers – that he enjoyed – shy as he was – he got over it – knowing that his comfort was paramount in his care by these truly gifted and caring people. PSW’s Cory, Laura and Amber, you brightened his day. Carmen and Sabrina – you helped him realize his wish (although brief) to return to his own bed and walk with his walker – he was one determined man – not to be denied.

Nurses Bobbi and Jason – Gail would not have coped as well without their continued support and genuine caring of Mike.

Marie Rose (Ladouceur) Scott – October 4, 1935 ~ July 15, 2021 (age 85)

Marie Rose Scott (Ladouceur) –  passed away peacefully at home, on Thursday, July 15, 2021. She was 85 years old. Marie was the beloved wife of the late John Alfred Scott (2020). Loving Mother of Cindy Scott, and Kevin Scott. Cherished grandmother of Sarah Nicol (Kyle Muehlegg), and Andrew Nicol.

Sidney “Art” Arthur Franklin – February 15, 1933 ~ July 13, 2021 (age 88)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather who left us much too soon.

Art was born in Wallaceburg, Ontario, on February 15, 1933, and was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge, after a prolonged illness. He was in his 89th year. He fought bravely and faithfully throughout his illness and was an inspiration to all who knew him. Art leaves behind his wife, Patricia, of 63 years, and four children; Terry Franklin (Linda d.2021), Gary Franklin (Joanne), Tammy Blais (Ray), and Scott Franklin (Brent McNabb).

Art was a skilled carpenter who took part in many projects in Muskoka, where he resided until the time of his passing. He was a proud member of the Bracebridge Royal Canadian Legion Branch and a member of the congregation at Pine Grove Fellowship Church. Art will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

In keeping with Art’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family wishes to extend their thanks and gratitude to Dr. Hotson, the many nurses of SMMH Bracebridge, and Closing the Gap. Andre Harold Jenkins – December 22, 1952 ~ July 13, 2021 (age 68)

Passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at Andy’s House in Port Carling, at the age of 68. Andre was the beloved husband to Betty Jenkins (Gilbert) of 47 years. Cherished father of David, Lyle, and Stacy (Clayton) Bell. Proud grandfather of Zac Bell.  Dear brother of Wilda (Randy) Doyle, and Greg (Ingrid) Jenkins.  Respected brother-in-law to Sheila (Don) Holder, Debbie (Joe) Barnett, and Paul Gilbert. Uncle of Kurtis, Katie, Sam, Katrina, Candace, Holly, Crystal, Brent, and Brooke. Loving son of Myrtle and the late Harold Jenkins.  Dad was a man of many words of wisdom, he will be dearly missed.

Hugh Carlton Fairfield – December 9, 1931 ~ July 10, 2021 (age 89)

On July 10, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. Hugh Carlton Fairfield passed peacefully in the arms of his loving wife, daughters and family. 

Hugh was Born December 9, 1931 in Selkirk, Manitoba. The oldest child of Finlay Robert Fairfield and Esther Jean Carpenter. Hugh loved to spend his time with his father in the Fairfield Woolen Mill. This is where he grew to love manufacturing. 

The Fairfield Woolen Mills supplied blankets across Canada and made uniform fabric during the Second World War.  The family moved the company from Selkirk to Winnipeg. His father died when Hugh was 18. After his father died Hugh went to university in Massachusetts. Meanwhile, he married his childhood sweetheart Adele Sanderson.  

Next, the family business moved to Preston, Ontario. The family business was bought by the Jamaican government and Hugh and his family moved to Jamaica.  Hugh had the responsibility to build a factory and hire and train staff.  When that job ended Hugh moved back to Canada and became employed by the Solary Division of what was to become the Sunbeam Company.  He remained at Sunbeam until his retirement at age 58. 

Hugh was always an active volunteer. Early 1970, in Brantford, a friend asked Hugh to find a better way to treat children with cerebral palsy. Hugh worked with the children, parents and levels of government and led Rotary in finding and locating a school that eventually grew into the Landsdowne Childrens Centre.  This Centre was an early leader providing specialized treatment for children with physical disabilities. Hugh is a charter member of the Landsdowne Children’s Centre.  

He retired to the place he loved most in the world, Muskoka, and continued to help out in the community. He took pleasure in being able to mentor new businesses both locally and as the president of the Ontario Division of BDC.  He agreed to co-chair a Muskoka Lakes golf tournament and that raised the most money that this tournament had ever raised. 

Hugh was an avid golfer and was often asked to be part of a team to raise funds in the community. His love of snowmobiling meant many hours keeping track of the records for the clubs. He loved curling and enjoyed many years competing provincially with a seniors curling team.  He taught his four daughters to love Muskoka, as he did.  They all learned to drive a boat, sail and paddle. They love to water ski, snow ski, hike in the woods, and enjoy the night sky.  His love for his family and loyalty to his job were his life. 

Sorely missed by daughters, partners, grandchildren and great grandchildren; Wendy Whillans and Bill Keller, Lisa and Youssef Ziada (Owain), Fin Whillans and Erynn Shaw (Eamon,Greta) and Kaely Whillans; Diane and Larry Pick,Jennifer and Greg Sanders (Ava,Mat) Eric Pick and Emimel Samonte; Jan Bradley; Jessica and Mike Youwe(John Hugh,William Michael) 

Bobbi and John Garrow; Thompson, Turner and Devynn Garrow; And the love of his life Adele Fairfield.

Toms Zvilna – August 23, 1946 ~ July 8, 2021 (age 74)

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Toms Zvilna who went peacefully in his sleep on July 7, 2021 in his 75th year.

He is survived by his partner of 43 years, Lynda Donovan, his loving step-children, Sheri (Jonathan and Mikayla) and Timothy and siblings Dace, Aina, twin brother Petris and Ugis. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Aina and Jekabs and sister Ieva.

Born in Germany, having fled the Russian occupation of Latvia, his family moved to Canada in 1950 and settled in Toronto after landing in Halifax at Pier 21. Toms attended the University of Toronto and chose a career in medicine. He worked in North York and eventually settled into a 29-year career at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge. He retired as Chief Technologist of the hospital laboratory where he worked alongside Lynda and educated and entertained his step-children with the wonders of science!

Toms was an avid outdoorsman and spent quality time fishing, waterskiing and adventuring on the Muskoka river and Lake Muskoka with his family. He also spent many happy days fishing in Parry Sound with his closest friends Bill, Mike, Randy and Scotty. He and Lynda also spent quality time with their neighbours and good friends, John and Susan.

Toms was a loving, kind and generous person who enjoyed life and loved to laugh. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

There will be no formal celebration of life, but his family asks that you take a moment to reflect on your time with him. Memorial donations in memory of Toms can be gratefully made to a charity of your choice.

O. Willa (Goheen) Cooper – 1924 – 2021

Daughter of the late Edith and William Goheen, Willa passed peacefully, in her sleep at home, on Fri., July 2, 2021. Willa answered her Saviour’s call and took Jesus’ hand as she entered her eternal home. Beloved wife of the late Harold Thomas Cooper.

Loving mother of Sterling (Cheryl) Cooper, Linda (Angel) Valentin, Wilma (Cooper) Kelley, Myron (Louise) Cooper, Joy (Frank) Lutzi, Carolyn (Ben) Peters.

She will be missed by 9 grandchildren: Ben (Rebekah) Cooper, Tim (Mary) Cooper; Jonathan (Katie) Valentin, Joshua (Elda) Valentin, Celeste (Mark) Donleavy; Rachel (Justin) Nelson; Rebecca (Jory) Hewson, Pamela (Justin) Robinson; Julia Peters.

She also loved her 20 great-grandchildren.

Willa was predeceased by her dear brother R. Elmer Goheen wife Grace Goheen; loving sister Iva (Goheen) Break and husband Carl.

Loved and survived by sisters Lois Parke (husband Bert predeceased), and Ruth (Harvey) Bradley.

Willa was born Oct. 28, 1924 and raised in Housey’s Rapids. She attended a one-room school within walking distance of her home which is standing as a private home. She then attended Gravenhurst High School and then trained as a schoolteacher at the former Lorne Parke College in Port Credit, ON. She taught elementary school children, and was an encouragement to each of her students, for a few years until she married Harold in 1946. She was also a supply teacher. She enjoyed being outside, working with the farm animals and her vegetable and flower gardens. Doing crafts was a special treat for her. Her highest pleasure was raising their 6 children to walk in the ways of the Lord. She faithfully attended the old Housey’s Rapids Free Methodist Church and then the new Ryde Centennial Free Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, and faithfully served in various capacities. She did well in all her accomplishments in spite of developing Polio while expecting her first child who was born in 1947. More recently she suffered from post polio syndrome.

In recent years, she enjoyed hearing gospel music, Christian speakers and reading her Bible and books. She really enjoyed visiting with family and friends very much. She had a real burden for family members and friends who hadn’t yet committed themselves to the Lord, and often prayed for each one by name. While suffering the pain of a heart attack she thought, “If Hell is this painful, I don’t want any of my relatives or friends to go through it! Lord, please help them to know You!” Her greatest prayer is to be reunited with those family and friends she has been praying for over the years.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at the Cooper’s Falls Free Methodist Cemetery.

Patricia Ann Paterson – January 7, 1948 – June 26, 2021  (Age 73)

Passed away peacefully at the Mariposa Hospice in Orillia, with her family by her side. Patricia was born in Aberdeen, Scotland to Bill and Elva Paterson. Upon leaving the forces, her parents moved to Moncton, NB. Patricia graduated with a Bachelor of Education from University of New Brunswick, taught school for one year in Moncton, then left for the “big city” of Toronto at 20 years old!

After teaching for over 30 years in Toronto at Brockton High School and Eastern High School of Commerce, and marrying the woodworking instructor at Brockton High, retirement was thoroughly enjoyed at their cottage/home on Raey Lake in Gravenhurst, ON. Swimming, gardening, golfing, bridge, golfing, bridge and more golfing!… consumed the days, but she still found time for volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Society in the District of Muskoka, as well as keeping in touch with her six nieces and nephews! They appreciated her educational expectations, her and Peter’s investment advice, her golf lessons,
(she couldn’t understand why they didn’t want Bridge lessons!), their summer visits, and especially her rhubarb crisp!
Thank you, Aunt Patricia.

In earlier years, she and Peter travelled in their Westfalia camper across Canada and around the perimeter of the US; then extensively in Asia, Europe, and Russia; later, with friends and family to China, Africa, and Bermuda. Patricia attended Tai Chi for many years in Bracebridge. She wintered in Ruskin and in Sun City Centre, Florida, continuing Tai Chi, golf and bridge with her southern friends!

Patricia is survived by her sister Sandra (Gary) Nickerson of New Brunswick and her brother Brian (Susan) of Nova Scotia, as well as nieces and nephews She is predeceased by her parents, husband Peter Grabowski, and brother James.

A special thank you to the staff of Mariposa Hospice of Orillia. They are the angels who surrounded her when most needed. Also, thanks to special friends always there to help out with groceries, cooking, driving, and being present. A huge thank you to her sister and brother for everything!!

Marie ‘Ella’ Luella (Atkinson) Hammond – May 7, 1929 ~ June 26, 2021 (age 92)

Passed away peacefully at The Pines Long Term Care Home, on Saturday, June 26, 2021, at the age of 92. Ella was predeceased by her first husband Tom Hammond, in 1986. Predeceased again by her second husband, Woody Forth, in 2000. Left to mourn are her children Dan, Bill (Ruth), and Kathy Kruger (Ludwig); grandchildren Bronwyn (Dave), Adam (Marta), Stacie (Rob), Stephen, Aaron (Amber), Logan (Michelle), Natalie (Tyson), and Hannah (Denver); great grandchildren Kieran, Ronan, India, Gordie, Landon, Nolan, Layten, Laycee, and Emmett. Predeceased by her children Steve, and Kim (Susan). Ella will also be dearly missed by Jill Daw and her extended family and friends.

Nathan Scott Reynolds – October 16, 1993 ~ June 15, 2021 (age 27)

Nathan Scott Reynolds passed away suddenly in a tragic workplace accident at the age of 27 on June 15th, 2021. He was born in Bracebridge, Ontario on October 16, 1993. He is survived by his loving wife Lindsay Reynolds (nee Petten) of 3 years.
Nathan will be lovingly remembered by his parents Scott and Sandra Reynolds (nee Morash); his grandparents Edwin and Joy Reynolds, Carole and Rick Morash; his in-laws; aunts and uncles; cousins; and many friends.
Nathan had followed in his family’s footsteps with a career as a Lineman with Hydro One. He was an avid outdoors man, hunter, and fisherman. He enjoyed spending all of his time in Muskoka, where he was born and raised. His favourite place to be was either at the hunt camp or in the boat fishing.
Nathan’s other true love was his wife Lindsay, whom he loved with all of his heart. They shared an interest and love of the outdoors, and you could always find them out fishing, bird hunting, trying to shoot the biggest deer, or having a few beers with friends. He enjoyed spending all his free time with his close friends, wife, and family. Nathan was always the life of the party and could bring a smile to anyone’s face.
Nathan had a huge impact on everyone he met. Nathan will be remembered by all the memories he’s shared with his wife, family, and friends, and will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be held at the Bracebridge Fairgrounds, 331 Fraserburg Road, Bracebridge on Thursday, June 24th, 2021 from 2-4 p.m. & 6-9 p.m. and will be conducted in 45-minute intervals. Please carefully read below for instructions to register.

Marjorie “Jean” (Jacobs) Hawgood – January 6, 1923 ~ June 16, 2021 (age 98)

Passed away peacefully with her son by her side at The Pines Long Term Care Home on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at the age of 98. Jean leaves behind her daughter Wendy (Mike) Steffler, and her son Paul and his fiancée Wendy Thomas. Cherished grandmother of Kassondra, Jenny, Patrick, Michelle, and Tracy. Proud great-grandmother of 14. Great great grandmother of 8. Predeceased by her siblings Nina Jacobs, Ethel Jacobs, Don Jacobs, Ruth Tibbs, and Marvin Jacobs. Jean will be dearly missed by her friends and extended family.

MASON, Theresa Dawn – January 29, 1956 – May 12, 2021

After a courageous battle with cancer, Theresa passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at home and with her family around her at the age of 65. Theresa was born and raised in Bala. She is pre-deceased by her mother Mary Mason, her father Murray Mason, and her sister Joanne. Survived by her daughter, Amy Matchett, sons;
Christopher and Darrell, her brothers; Joe Mason and Tom Mason, and sister; Angie. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Theresa’s journey through life included 17 years as an EA working in the schools and with special needs children. She also was a PSW for a time. She loved her time at the schools and the many friends and children she met and helped there. In later years, she would work on the Lady Muskoka Boat Cruises with Bonnie, Al and her daughter Amy. Her life
took her on a Spiritual Journey when she met and started to take classes with her lifetime friend Rev. Bonnie Thew. She would later develop into a Medium, Reiki Master, Healer and a Reader which gave her much pleasure in helping others. She was recently Ordained which was a dream of hers. She was a member of the Muskoka Spiritualist Church. In her final moments here on earth, she asked that we love one another, and that we remember the times; the trips to Lillydale New York, the boat cruises and psychic fairs.
A celebration of Theresa’s life is planned for when the pandemic restrictions allow.

FISHER, Donald Edward – June 9, 1959—May 20, 2021

Passed away peacefully at Andy’s House (Port Carling) after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded with love by family and friends.
Left to grieve are his beloved fiancée, April, and her daughter, Savannah.
Precious son of Freida (the late Ted).
Treasured brother to Jean (Randy), Fred, Sherry (Lee), Rose (Dave), Debbie (Dale), and Brenda.
Cherished uncle to Crystal, Tom, Eric, Graeme (the late Carmen), Stephanie, Sam, Brooke and Matthew. Great-uncle to Malcolm, Tori and Will.
Don loved life outdoors and cruising on his Harley which led to many great adventures. He was known as the “BBQ Master” to his family and friends and liked nothing better than hanging out with us all. He worked for Titanium (formerly Muskoka Transport) and drove stateside for many years. We will certainly miss his stories and sense of humour. Don will be sadly missed but never forgotten.
Special thanks to the wonderful and caring staff at the Bracebridge Hospital and Andy’s House. Don was in such good hands.

COKER, Byron Colin – June 14, 1935 to May 22, 2021

“Boys O’ boys” … WHAT A GREAT LIFE!
Byron passed away peacefully at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge with his family at his side following a short hospitalization relating to his pulmonary fibrosis. He was a vibrant and active 85-year-old right up to, and including, the day of his admission. Byron enjoyed life to the fullest and was always on the go. He has left behind his wife of 52 years, Hylda (nee Wilcox). She was his ‘sweetheart’ to the end. Byron will be greatly missed by his son Colin and daughter-in-law Kristen, his daughter Kelly, son-in-law Jamie Nairn and his grandsons Tannor and Ryley. Byron leaves behind his youngest brother Alan (Sonya) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Bruce (Patricia) and his sister Marlene Cameron (Ken).
Byron was the eldest of 4 children born to Reginald James Coker and Marion Alice Ritchie and grew up in Leaside. Byron was a proud graduate of the University of Toronto Pharmacy Class of 6T1 and practiced as a pharmacist both in Scarborough and later in Port Carling at his independent pharmacies known as “The Apothecary Shop”.
His incredibly well-rounded skills and endless energy allowed Byron to build his modest cottage on Lake Rosseau in the mid-sixties as he was studying at University. This cottage has since been renovated into their year-round home and has become a very special place for extended family and friends to visit and enjoy quality time in “God’s Country” as he loved to call it.
Byron was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing many sports himself including golf, curling and tennis. He enjoyed golfing every Thursday with his men’s group. He was recently honoured to have been granted Lifetime Membership at the Port Carling Curling Club where he had been an eager and very active member since making Port Carling his year-round home in 1989.
Byron had energy beyond his years and delighted in serving his community. He and his wife, Hylda, were recognized by the District of Muskoka with their Community Services Recognition Award as Outstanding Community Contributors in 2015.
Byron has also been an active and contributing member of the Port Carling United Church for many decades. He could often be seen coming and going on a daily basis at all hours, cutting grass, shoveling snow, removing garbage and recycling and doing other odd jobs to keep the church looking great and functioning well.
As an enthusiastic and outgoing member of the Port Carling Lions Club, Byron thoroughly enjoyed contributing heavily to the day-to-day activities of the Lions over the past 30 years. He was honoured years ago to receive the “Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services” (the highest-ranking award presented to a Lion) and more recently, their “Footprint Award” in 2014. In his years following retirement – Byron found a new ‘full time job’ in the “Bottleworks of Port Carling” a program run by the PC Lions which accepts donations of empty bottles and cans that would otherwise clutter our landfill and returns them to depots – collecting the money to be put toward worthy community initiatives. Byron visited our local landfill on an almost daily basis sorting and tidying the donated bottles and cans and loading them into his precious ‘beer-wagon’ for transport to local depots. There was nothing that he enjoyed more than ‘putting a load on’ with his Lion buddies. He absolutely delighted in telling anyone who would listen about the money that they would bring in each day and the amount of waste that they were diverting from the landfill. He loved visiting with folks at the landfill – many of whom he knew from days gone by in the pharmacy or his community activities. He truly thrived in this environment!
Byron will be truly missed as a pillar of the community of Port Carling. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will take place when Covid restrictions lift enough to allow it, as will a larger community-based Celebration of Life. Notification to follow. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of James on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at his home in Bracebridge.
James leaves behind his sisters; Colleen (Randy) and Mary (Mike), his nephews; Brandon (Bree) and Cameron, his nieces; Amanda (Stevie) and Lindsay. Great-uncle to Stephanie, Emma,
Bentley, Hallee and Jaeda.
James was a kind and gentle soul who had a way of giving the biggest and best teddy-bear hugs. With the classic long white beard of Santa Claus, Christmas was a very special time of year as James would dress up as Santa and surprise all the children.
James also found peace in fishing and a great thrill when hunting.
For those who wish, donations in James’ memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Mental Health Association – Muskoka.

BARDEN, Trevor Richard – July 14, 1946 – May 10, 2021  

Passed away peacefully at The Pines Long Term Care Home in Bracebridge, Ontario on Monday, May 10, 2021 at age 74. Beloved husband of Rosalind Elizabeth Harris for 47 years. He will be greatly missed by his son, Colin of Utterson, brother Paul (Lars) of Corvallis, Oregon and brother Joel (Deb) of Coldwater, Ontario. Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Joyce Barden, his brother Bryan and his sister Pamela Barden. Also mourning his loss are Sisters-in-law Brenda (John) Baker, Pat (Dave) McPhail and Brother-in-law Bill Harris, along with nine nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.|
Trevor was born in East York, Ontario and moved with his family to Port Severn and Coldwater. He went to Park Street Collegiate in Orillia and graduated from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Civil Technology. Before and after graduation he worked for McCormick and Rankin, Engineers and Bailey Construction in Orillia. In 1973, he met Roz on a blind date on Friday, the 13th of April and they were married the following year on Groundhog Day (so that Trevor would never forget his wedding anniversary). For five years they lived in Orillia until Trevor took a job with Fowler Construction in Bracebridge in 1979. He worked as a Supervisor, Estimator, Sand Camp Supervisor and finally, as Purchaser.  
Weekends in the summer were spent with Roz and Colin at the Harris family cottage near Pointe au Baril, Ontario. Annually since 1973, the “Harris Lake Gang”, a group of Trevor’s school friends and their spouses, would gather at the cottage for a fun-filled weekend of stories, libation and good food. Over the winter months, when he could take vacations, Trevor liked to travel. He went with Roz (and sometimes Colin or Roz’s brother Bill) to Florida, California, Nevada, Arizona, Columbia, Jamaica, Venezuela, and Costa Rica. 
In 2002, Trevor received a devastating diagnosis of Huntington’s Disease. Unable to work any more because of his disability, he and Roz bought a trailer and toured the East Coast of Canada and then headed to Arizona for the winter. Trevor and Roz continued to travel to Tucson together for 15 years, enjoying the company of friends from all over Canada and the United States. 
Trevor’s biggest passion was fishing! He spent countless hours in “The Fishing Machine” searching for “the big one” on Harris Lake and surrounding waters. He enjoyed annual fishing tournaments with friends both in the Huntsville area and at the cottage (where the guys tried to out-fish the women). Trevor never really cared about whether he caught any fish, he just liked being out there fishing. It was a passion that he passed on to his son Colin. Even in the latter years, Trevor enjoyed fishing from the family pontoon boat. 
Trevor was an armchair sports enthusiast for most of his life. He loved to watch baseball, hockey, basketball and especially, professional golf on TV.  Every Thursday to Sunday for the past 15 years or more, you could find Trevor watching the current PGA tournament. He could always tell you where they were playing, who was winning and how the Canadian players were doing. One of the highlights of his life was seeing his favourite players, including Tiger Woods, at Match Play tournaments in Tucson.  
From the time he was a teenager, Trevor was an avid stamp collector. He was an active member of the Muskoka Stamp Club and the Tucson Stamp Club. For as long as he was physically able, he worked on and enjoyed his collection of Canadian and World stamps.  
Trevor’s family would like to thank the many Personal Support Workers, Social Workers, Nurses, Doctors, other medical professionals, volunteers and dear friends that helped care for him throughout his journey with Huntington’s. And though his time there was short, they would like to thank the staff of The Pines Long Term Care Home for their compassionate care. Almost since Trevor was diagnosed, the Huntington’s Clinic at North York Hospital has been an important resource and source of support for the family.  
At Trevor’s request, there will be no formal service. A celebration of life with family and close friends will occur at a later date. Donations in Trevor’s memory may be made to The Huntington Society of Canada, Hospice Huntsville, The Friends (Parry Sound) or the charity of your choice. In his honour, take some time and go fishing.
