Gravenhurst is set to enhance its recognition of local athletic talent with plans to digitize the Lions Sports Hall of Fame at the Centennial Centre. During a recent council meeting, members received a report detailing the initiative and authorized the allocation of $8,000 from the hall of fame reserve fund. This funding will go towards purchasing and installing a digital screen, software, and wall wrap, effectively transforming the current hall of fame situated on the second floor into a vibrant digital display in the main lobby.
Director of Recreation, Arts and Culture, Shawna Patterson, described this move as a significant boost to visibility. “This new digital hall of fame will ensure that all past and present nominees receive the recognition they deserve,” she stated. Furthermore, Patterson confirmed that staff would collaborate with the Community Awards Committee to maintain the hall of fame’s physical and digital aspects.
The proposal to digitize the Lions Sports Hall of Fame was first introduced at the Community Awards Committee meeting on February 29, 2024. This initiative aims to make the Hall of Fame more accessible to the public and to more prominently celebrate the legacies of local athletes. The current location has restricted opportunities for visitors to engage with various historical memorabilia, including equipment and trophies, as well as the inspiring stories of past inductees.
Administration underscored the importance of developing a more dynamic platform to honour the achievements of Gravenhurst’s local athletes and to ensure their legacy is preserved for future generations.
