District of Muskoka offers traffic update on “Flats” section of Bracebridge

From the District of Muskoka:

🚧 Traffic Update – Muskoka Road 118 at Westmall Road (‘the Flats’), Bracebridge 🚧

Thank you for your patience and your input. Together, we’re working toward a safer, more functional road network in Muskoka.

We recently made changes to road markings along Muskoka Road 118 at West Mall Road (‘the Flats’) to improve safety and traffic flow — but we’ve heard from many of you that the new layout wasn’t working as intended.

We’re listening, adapting, and committed to safety and solutions that work.

After carefully reviewing performance data and community feedback, we’ll be reverting back to the previous lane markings. This is a reflection of our commitment to making decisions that serve the people who use our roads every day.

Engineering often involves trying, testing, and adjusting — especially in busy areas with many different users.

  1. Paul Fournier says:

Good decision to revert back to the original configuration. Simpler original solution would have been to repaint and maintain the road with clearer markings and reduce/enforce a slower speed limit from Manitoba St to either Dandelion Lane or even Dandelion Road. That and a couple of speed cameras would go a long way to calming things down along this stretch of road.

  2. Norm Raynor says:

Are the concrete barriers rented like they were/are at landfill sites? If they are rented what does it cost? Would it make sense to buy he barriers and store them after they are removed so we don’t have to rent in the future?

  3. Cindy Bailey says:

The median/barrier could be moved back to allow an easier lane turn onto 118 from Wellington on the inside lane. It’s pretty tight.

  4. Mark C. Gibbesh says:

Well that’s one good thing. Now if we can get rid of the concrete barriers fdwn the middle of the road then we’ll be in business.
Any collisions that happen along that stretch of road are a result of driver error and nothing else. The road was well designed yo start with. Perhaps the timing of the traffic lights could be adjusted to create a space for left turns.
