Premiers from across the country arrived in Huntsville’s Deerhurst Resort this morning, where they’re expected to stay until Wednesday.
On the agenda are issues such as emergency management, energy security, sovereignty and national security, Canada-U.S. relations, international and internal trade, labour mobility, immigration, health, and public safety.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who is the chair of the Council of the Federation and has a cottage in the area, said, “welcome to Huntsville, a great town.”
Ford is expected to host a special dinner at his cottage for the provincial leaders this evening.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to hold a separate meeting with the premiers on Tuesday. Following that meeting, the PM is scheduled to depart, and the premiers will resume discussions on various topics.
The Council of the Federation rotates the chair position annually among the premiers, with the deputy chair automatically becoming the chair each July. Since Ford assumed the role in July 2024, his term as chair will end in July 2025, and Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz will become the chair.
A closing news conference is planned for the afternoon of July 23.
