Gravenhurst driver ditches evidence but can’t dodge arrest

A driver who ran into a guardrail on the Gravenhurst Parkway was called to account in a Bracebridge courtroom recently.

Charles Johnston, 46, pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while impaired by drugs.

Court heard that on April 25, 2022, the OPP received a call from a concerned citizen regarding a potential impaired driver.

When the police arrived they found a red Jeep that had crashed into the guardrail on the Gravenhurst Parkway hitting two of the wooden posts and tearing out the attached cables.

Staff from nearby Beaver Creek Institution were also at the scene when the police arrived. Despite the police demands to stop the driver proceeded to dump an unknown substance out. The substance could not be recovered but a glass pipe was found in the car and the driver, Johnston, exhibited signs of intoxication, court heard. Johnston refused a blood test but court heard he has a previous criminal record.

He was sentenced to $3,000 in fines and a one-year driving ban.
