Earlier this week a Gravenhurst man was sentenced to 180 days in jail after pleading guilty to multiple charges.
Appearing virtually in a Bracebridge courtroom from jail on Tuesday, Corey Hynes, 49, pleaded guilty to theft, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, and to counts of failing to attend court.
Court heard that on June 30, 2021 police were conducting surveillance in Gravenhurst when they saw Hynes in the driver’s seat of a vehicle. They were familiar with Hynes and the fact he was under conditions not to be driving. After being pulled over, the police found fentanyl, cocaine and $4,000 in cash, all of which he admitted belonged to him.
On June 19, the Bracebridge OPP received a call at roughly 10:12 a.m. regarding a theft from a grocery store in Gravenhurst. The suspect, who turned out to be Hynes, ran out of the store but was ultimately caught after being chased by both grocery store staff and the OPP. He was found to be in possession of four packages of strip loin steaks valued at $183.
Hynes subsequently failed to appear in court on two occasions.
Court heard that Hynes has lived a difficult life, and has had relatives go through the residential school system.
In addition to the jail sentence, he was placed on 12 months of probation.
