A man’s repeat convictions for impaired driving caught up with him in a Bracebridge court recently.
Christian Wilkinson, 27, recently pled guilty to impaired driving and driving without insurance.
Court heard that on March 8, 2023, at 10:44 pm the Bracebridge OPP observed a vehicle on Brock Street in Gravenhurst. The car made an abrupt turn, coming up on the sidewalk, before speeding away. The police pulled over the driver, Wilkinson, who immediately got out of the vehicle. Court heard Wilkinson was unstable and smelled of alcohol. An open bottle of rum was observed on the passenger seat.
He ultimately blew a reading of 176 mg per 100 ml of blood, more than double the legal limit. It was also determined Wilkinson was driving without insurance.
Court heard Wilkinson has prior convictions for impaired driving and driving without insurance.
Wilkinson was sentenced to a $400 fine for his previous conviction of driving without insurance, despite the set minimum of $5,000. Second offences carry a mandatory minimum fine of $10,000 but Wilkinson was sentenced to a $3,000 fine, arguing he didn’t have the means to pay the higher fines.
He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and a two-year driving ban on the impaired conviction.
