A man appeared in a Bracebridge courtroom recently to answer for his part in a police stop that turned up multiple types of fentanyl, crack cocaine, oxycodone and gold bullion pebbles.
Appearing virtually, Paul Tyson, 34, pleaded guilty to possession of fentanyl.
Court heard that on Nov. 22, 2020, police were conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 11 in Gravenhurst during the early morning hours when they spotted a vehicle travelling 134 km/hr. The vehicle was stopped for speeding and as a result of their investigation, Tyson, along with another man and a 16-year-old youth, were arrested for possession of a controlled substance.
According to a police report, inside the vehicle police found 15.1 grams of purple fentanyl, 25 grams of yellow fentanyl, 2.2 grams of beige fentanyl, 14.3 grams of crack cocaine, 30 Oxy 40mg tablets, two Percocet 5mg tablets, $1,180 in Canadian currency, 29.6 grams of gold bullion pebbles and a prohibited knife.
Court heard that Tyson originally lied to police regarding his role but phone records later showed that he was knowingly involved in the transportation of illegal narcotics.
The Crown and defense put together a joint sentencing submission for a suspended sentence and 12 months probation. However, the judge was not willing to immediately agree to the joint submission, as is typically the case.
Calling the charges very serious, the justice said he would need some some time to consider sentence and the matter was postponed.
