House arrest for bicycle thief

A bike thief from Lake of Bays had his day in court recently.

Appearing in front of Bracebridge judge, Michael Burke, 48, pled guilty to possession of stolen property – a bicycle worth approximately $700.

Court heard that Burke sold the bike to a man who was then confronted by the original owner while he was riding it home. The victim explained to the man that the bike had been stolen from him the day before.

When the victim heard his stolen bike had been sold by Burke, he went to Burke’s home. Court heard that Burke was hiding in the bushes when the victim arrived but Burke’s mother returned the money.

Court heard that Burke has a considerable criminal record and had only recently been released from prison.

Burke was sentenced to 90 days of house arrest and 12 months probation.
