Huntsville man convicted of punching police officer in the head

The Muskoka courts have been kept busy recently dealing with multiple counts of people assaulting local police officers.

One of those was Paul Degazio, 30, of Huntsville, who appeared recently in a Bracebridge courtroom to plead guilty to breaching his court-ordered conditions and assaulting a police officer.

Court heard that in July of 2023 Degazio was arrested and the terms of his release included a provision to stay away from certain people.

On March 22, 2024, Huntsville OPP received multiple calls regarding a disturbance. Police arrived and found Degazio with people he had been ordered to stay away from. Degazio proceeded to barricade himself in a bathroom, court heard. He eventually swung the door open and punched one of the attending officers in the face. A struggle then ensued as the officers attempted to take Degazio into custody before he was ultimately arrested.

The Crown attorney pointed out that the case was one of three cases of assaulting a police officer they were dealing with in court on that day alone.

Degazio was sentenced to 120 days in custody.
