Impaired driver busted “off-roading” on Bracebridge snowmobile trail

A Bracebridge driver racked up his third impaired driving-related offence after an off-roading expedition down a snowmobile trail went wrong.

Tyler Macdonald, 37, pled guilty to driving with over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in his system during a recent court appearance in Bracebridge

Court heard that on Aug. 17, 2023, OPP received a crash notification for a potential accident near High Falls Road and Hwy 11 in Bracebridge.

When they arrived, police found a vehicle had struck a tree on a snowmobile trail. They found a can of beer near the door of the vehicle and were able to follow tracks, discovering Macdonald a short distance away.

Court heard Macdonald had been off-roading in his truck.

He ultimately blew readings of 210 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, more than double the legal limit.

Court heard Macdonald has two previous impaired driving-related convictions.

He was sentenced to four months of house arrest, two months under curfew, 12 months of probation and a three-year driving ban. Justice Edward Carlton also cautioned Macdonald that if he continued to drink and drive he would face time in jail.

“The public has no patience for recidivist offenders when it comes to drinking and driving,” said Carlton.

    The law needs to change.
On second conviction a lifetime driving ban and mandatory jail of 6 months, no house arrest.
