A scary situation nearly went from bad to worse due to an impaired driver, a Bracebridge courtroom heard earlier this week.
The court heard how on Aug. 21, 2021, Anthony Allard, 34, nearly crashed into the scene of an ongoing accident on Highway 35.
The Crown attorney explained that on the day in question police and ambulance were on the scene of a serious traffic accident. The OPP on scene saw a van approaching at a high rate of speed before it nearly hit the pylons delineating the crash scene.
The OPP gave chase and caught up with the driver, Allard. When pulled over Allard told the police that they needed better signage to indicate the accident scene. However, Allard had no seatbelt on, smelled of alcohol and the van was littered with empty beer cans.
He was arrested for impaired driving and ultimately blew readings of 250 mg per 100 ml of blood, more than triple the legal limit. He pleaded guilty to having more than 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
He was fined $3,000 and banned from driving for 12 months.
“I’m sure your advice to the police on where they put their pylons didn’t go over well,” the judge noted in passing sentence.
