Impaired transport truck driver jackknives into ditch

A  truck driver was arrested twice in one year for operating his transport while impaired, a Bracerbidrge court heard recently.

Jaswinder Singh, 47, of Caledon, pled guilty to driving with over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, stemming from an incident that occurred on Jan. 27, 2022, in the Township of Georgian Bay.

On that day at roughly 7 pm, Bracebridge OPP was called to the scene of a collision on Hwy 400 near Lake Joseph Road.

The driver, Singh, said he had swerved after a deer ran out on the highway. The truck then jackknifed and crashed into a ditch causing significant damage to both the transport and the trailer.

Court heard Singh had been convicted eight months earlier of impaired driving while operating a different transport truck.

The Crown requested 60 days house arrest but the request was denied.

Singh was sentenced to 18 months probation, a $3,000 fine and an 18-month driving ban.

This driver could have killed a dozen people. No jail? Not even house arrest. Ridiculous. The system is broken. One impaired by a transport driver and it should be a five year ban if not permanent ban. Commercial drivers should have zero blood alcohol. Other jurisdictions have this rule.

Really? He must have had a good lawyer. He should be banned from ever driving a large truck again, and the company he was driving for should have been fined heavily. Next time he drinks and drives he may kill himself or worse yet, someone else.
